On this day in 1823, Clement Clarke Moore's beloved poem
A Visit from St. Nicholas (also known as 'Twas the night before Christmas) was first published. The library has several versions in the collection, but all are checked out for the upcoming holiday. However,
'Twas the Day before Christmas by Brenda Seabrooke is available; this beautifully illustrated book tells the story behind the famous poem and Clarke's inspiration for writing it.

In celebration of the new Star Wars film, stop by the children's room Thursday, December 17 and Friday, December 18th to make an Ewok paper bag puppet and a moveable BB-8. BB-8 is a new droid from the new Star Wars movie.

The New York Times just posted their "Notable Children's Books of 2015" list in the November 30th Sunday Book Review section. The list mentions titles from picture book and illustrated fiction categories, as well as, fiction and non-fiction books for middle grade readers. While the dark might make some younger patrons sleepy, Monday night, some young gourmets trotted into the Syosset Library Children's Room to make a Thanksgiving treat!

The Syosset Library recently presented two programs in honor of Veteran’s Day.
Author Valerie Pfundstein visited the Children’s Room on November 5th and read her book Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood to an audience of adults and children. In a moving presentation, she told us stories about friends and family members who are veterans, including one German Shepherd. She encouraged the children to find the veterans in their own families and to write down their stories.
On Veteran’s Day, the Banjo Rascals performed a patriotic themed concert in our theater for the enjoyment of all.
A world of gratitude to all our veterans, past and present.

The sky is getting darker earlier each night, and pumpkins are everywhere. While costumes and candy are likely on everyone's mind, another Halloween tradition lurks within the stacks of your own library!
Scary Stories! Whether you prefer short tales to chill your bones, or a longer page turner with shivers waiting within each chapter, Syosset Public Library has just what you need.
Here are some of my own favorites.
Not for the feint of heart,
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, is a favorite! These books have been around for decades, and feature short tales no longer than four pages long. If
Stephen Gammell's illustrations don't scare you away from the cover art, you will surely enjoy the series as a whole.
If you're pressed for time, check out
Half-Minute Horrors, a collection of short stories from famous authors such as,
Lemony Snicket, and
Neil Gaiman. Each story proves that you don't need more than 30 seconds to tell a good scary story.
Another longtime favorite is the
Goosebumps series, by
R.L. Stine. These books have freaked out readers since the early 90's, and has gone on to spawn a television series, as well as several movies, one of which is due out October 16th, 2015.
For those who find these books to be mere appetizers, feel free to check out anything from the list below, which are longer reads, but still quite freaky.

On Sunday, October 4 the Syosset Public Library presented our 3rd annual autism-friendly performance. This year Plaza Productions, Inc. put on a wonderful production of Disney's The Little Mermaid, Jr. The performance was specially designed and adapted for children with autism and autism-spectrum disorders and their families. We provide a calming corner and coping tools in the lobby and families are welcome to visit at any time during the performance. Wednesday evening we had a great program at the library -- Family Maker Fun! As you can tell by the name, we certainly had fun. Families came and played with various building toys together -- ZOOBS, K'NEX, a Quadrilla marble roller coaster, Keva planks, Snap Circuits, Jr. and of course, LEGOs. The next Family Maker Fun is on Wednesday, October 28th at 7 PM (registration date is October 14th). Hope to see you there!

September 23rd is the first day of Fall. It is the time of year to play in the leaves, eat pumpkin pie, and drink hot apple cider. We have already gotten some cool fall weather. Here are some books to cozy with this fall season.

The town of Syosset is hosting their annual Street Fair:
Sunday, September 20th from 10:00am-5:00pm.
Along with vendors and local stores the library will be there, too!
Come visit us. We will have give-aways, raffle prizes and information on upcoming events

Well, I rarely pay attention to celebrity gossip, but this particular piece has to do with The Muppets!
As I'm sure you've heard, after 40 years, Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog have split!

Say it isn't so!

Sadly, the news is true, and both have publicly stated that they had come to the mutual decision to end their relationship. The famous Frog and Pig duo announced their break up over (what else?) social media this past August. While Kermit and Piggy have been known to bicker in public, the main source of their choice might just be that Piggy herself, is more in love with the spotlight than Kermit is comfortable.
This news comes hot on the heels of the new Muppet show, which will be airing on ABC in a few weeks. For those of us who care to relive the glory days of Miss Piggy and Kermit's love, the The Syosset Public Library offers an extensive collection of classic Muppet related media. This includes
DVD's, CD Soundtracks, and books! One book in particular interest to this topic is
Miss Piggy's Night Out, an early reader, featuring a date between the two when they were just young love birds -- er -- love PIGS and FROGS.
To rub salt on the wounds of the news, rumor has it that Kermit has already moved on with a new pig named Denise! However, in typical form, Mr. The Frog remains coy, insisting over Twitter that the two (he and Denise) are just good friends.

Alright, Potter fans! I make no secret that I am absolutely WILD about Harry (Potter, that is)!
So, naturally, I have been pretty excited by recent news from Harry's literary "mother", J.K. Rowling.
You see, after the completion of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Ms. Rowling implied that she was finished writing about Harry and his world. Then, a year or so back, we were told that a new trilogy of films based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them would be making their way to our big screens soon! And THEN Ms. Rowling began writing short stories about non-central characters in the Potterverse, for instance, Draco Malfoy (is he really such a bad guy?), or the Durselys (was this one really necessary?). But the biggest news by far is that a stage play penned by Ms. Rowling herself would be making its way to London's West End (which is the city's equivalent to our Broadway's theater district). The play will be called, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
But what is The Cursed Child, exactly? Some news has leaked that part of the story would deal with Harry's parents, including James Potter and his Marauder friends. So, naturally, fans had assumed the story would be a prequel. Only, Rowling herself has tweeted otherwise.
Fans have also wondered why The Cursed Child will not be released in novel form.
Ms. Rowling has answered this is as well, yet she remains coy on the matter.
With all of this teasing, the fact remains that as American fans of the Harry Potter (now) franchise, we would all require a trip to London in order to experience this play for ourselves! So, would anyone be up for joining me in chartering a plane to the UK for the summer of 2016?

Happy Fourth of July! It's time to have barbecues, watch fireworks, and celebrate with family and friends.
Here are some quick facts about July 4th:
July 4th is Independence Day or also known as America’s birthday in the United States.
We celebrate the 4th of July because it represents the day that America became separate from British rule.
The Declaration of Independence was written on July 2nd 1776.
The colonists decided to write a document announcing they were no longer part of the British government and they were going to be a new nation called the United States of America.
This document is known as the Declaration of Independence.
Summer arrives on Sunday, June 21st at 12:38pm. It's time to laugh a little louder, run a little faster, jump a little higher AND read a little more.
That's right, summer is a perfect time to pick up a book. In between pool dates, park visits and camp a book is a great way to take a mental vacation.
The start of summer also kicks off our Summer Reading Program where reading can earn you weekly prizes and a chance to attend our exciting, invitation-only closing program.
This year's theme is EVERY HERO HAS A STORY. Choose a book about your favorite hero or let our librarians or our book lists help you find the perfect summer read.
We hope to see you on June 22nd when registration begins for our summer reading program.
