I got the call!
Well not "the" call but a text message from my niece, "Hi uncle Steve do you have time to talk?" I called Me: HiHer: what are you up to? Doing any projects? She wanted to know if I had time to do some artwork for her as part of an assignments for one of her college courses.Me: How many? Her: Only 20Me: By when? Her: I need them by cousin Marks weddingMe: That's two weeks awayHer: I knowMe: What class is this for? Her: Picture book writing (something like that) Me: Okay this is what I can do for you So I started...
I decided to treat it like a book dummy I figured it was the only way it will get done on time. Like any story I work on I broke down her version of Pandora's Box into a storyboard format and picked a handful of sketches to do as finished artwork.
Then I added the text I am no graphic designer so I make no claims that I understand fonts and what works best with illustrations; I did the best I could with what I had to work with.
It was a lot of hard work but I got it done on time.I personally think it should of been an A+ but her school does dot give them out.
On twitter I came across this:
"My firefly jar's Lid is gone. Woe betide it-- Scroll beside it: "I promise not To leave 'Til dawn." With a tiny flourish, Contract's on."
by Ame Dyckman
It struck a nerve I needed to illustrate it.
So I did this sketch first.
I posted the sketch to show Ame she loved it.
I started to do more sketches and came up with this idea.
I add shadows using India ink, and washes of watercolor
More layers of watercolor.
And finally
the finished artwork
Thank you Ame
Remember this Owl?It became this new one and as a bonus you also get Jedi Owl India ink, watercolor, acrylic white
It is that time of year!
The portfolio is dusted off, new artwork has been added, postcards are printed,
friends have been contacted.
That's Right!
The 2016 SCBWI Winter Conference is here.
Three days of getting up early getting home late, lectures, breakout sessions, portfolio review, hanging with friends, and that little voice in the back of my head saying
"will this year be the one I get discovered? "
It is a small voice.
It does happen, I have seen it with my own eyes, read interviews from other artist I admire.
So... Why not me?
I have been going to the winter conference since 2011 I knew very little back then I thought all I needed to do was show up and POOF!
That was squashed after the my very first breakout session with Art Director Lucy Ruth Cummins who showed an illustration she loved and said "I have been looking for the right project for this illustrator for four (4) years"
Four Years!?!?
My artwork has grown in that time I have a voice. It is clear and it is strong.
So... Why not me?
I know from my own experience that it can be a long road to getting published,
for some it takes longer then others.
Those same words said by Lucy was said again by Art Director Giuseppe Castellano during the illustration workshop he offers that I took.
Four years
So... ?
(I like to keep it at a whisper)

G: "Do you always use reference?"
Me: Yes
G: How about the penguins?
Me: Think think... Penguins...
This was one of the questions I was asked during my first one hour live chat
Giuseppe was critiquing my portfolio
I forgot about the penguins so the answer would be no unless you count seeing movie posters for Madagascar on the subway.
G: I would like to see you rework them but use reference.
Me: okay
As I answered a question or gave more detail on a illustration Giuseppe seemed to have already moved on and was looking at a different image. It made it a little confusing and yet entertaining to see how his thought processed worked.
G: Have you ever used ink quills?
Me: Not since college I don't remember being good at it.
G: Maybe you should try again.
Me: okay
Giuseppe has a true passion for art. I could seen it as he critique my portfolio.
It was easy to get swept up in his enthusiasm I hardly slept that night after our first chat.
I was so inspired I did the above image in one sitting the very next morning. |
2nd week my first attempt using ink quills, reference and figuring out color |
Second week G's email response to my email to him with the above image.
"Vary the line by using different nips" (well something like that)
|
3rd week final artwork |
It was not easy for me to let go of the original characters. But Giuseppe is inspiring; in the back of my head I kept hearing a voice say
"Trust your art director" and I had to just let go and trust.
Once I let go and found the first penguin reference everything else just fell into place. Thank You Giuseppe

What do you do when your internet has been shutdown for over ten day?
After the long long long... time talking to support .
You start doing other projects like,
put your picture book dummy together and mail it out to possible publishers.
Second you clean out of your computer of all the double or triple images of yourself you have saved.
Thirdly you pull out your sketch book and randomly select sketches and create art.
