I speak at schools all over the country -- and every now and then, I visit a school in my own backyard.

Monterey Hills Elementary is not too far from my house . . .
The school was celebrating their Young Author's Week, and since I'm a young author, I was invited to speak!

What was that? Oh. Okay. Um, I think that the "young authors" they were referring to were their own students.
So, we began setting up in the cafe-torium . . .

When, suddenly . . . BEEEEEEEEP, BEEEEEEEP, BEEEEEP. No, Peepy didn't light anything on fire. It was a fire drill!!!! BEEEEP . . .

We were totally impressed by how calm and collected everyone was . . .

One time, I was giving a presentation at a high school in the Chicago area, when BEEEEEEEP!!! Fire drill?
No! It was a real fire!!!!

Oops. Digression. Back to South Pasadena. I told the students that even though the many of my books are set in the fictional town of Rancho Rosetta, CA, it's really South Pasadena. Here's what they thought about that . . .
After, we visited the library. Super librarian Amy Blum and her furry friend presented us with CHOCOLATE!!!!

(How did she know that we love that stuff?)
Here's more of the library and some book lovers . . .

BTW, look! I get to play library at home . . .

Oops. That's another digression. Before we left Monterey Hills Elementary, Peepy got a gift all her own. These three played a concert just for her!

So how did we cap off our great afternoon? Here's how . . .

Hey! What's that? Why, it's the Children's Choice Book Awards . . . the only national book awards program where winning titles are selected by young readers of all ages. And who's hosting? CLICK HERE to find out. (Squeeeee!!!)

And finally, there's this. Look what I saw when visiting Art Center College of Design, near the Rose Bowl. Don't you want one of your own?

I'm back! In the last couple-ish of blogs, Peepy and I were in Scotland.

Here's an old shot of Peepy during an earlier visit. She was in Braveheart with Mel Gibson. However, her beauty detracted from him, so all her scenes were cut. Too bad. It would have been a better movie with her in it.

This week was a big one in the KitLit Universe. Yes! ALA Awards were announced. The winner of the Newbery is Katherine Applegate for THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN!!! Seen here with the one and only Peepy . . .

And the Caldecott goes to Jon Klassen for THIS IS NOT MY HAT. Here is he with this is not his BatPeep . . .

On the subject of people who can really draw, we went to see our pal Kazu Kibuishi the creator of AMULET, at Vroman's in Pasadena where I've had a couple of book launch parties . . .
He talked and drew a landscape the same time . . .

Here's his illustration . . .

Just kidding!!! I did that. Can you tell? (I wasn't able to get a good photo of Kazu's drawing.) However, you can see and even own one of his (see below) HERE.

Then, we went to get our Book #5 in the series signed by Jason Caffoe, the colorist for the series, and Kazu . . .
See those two little notebooks with Peepy? One's mine and one's Kazu's. We both store our ideas in them. Plus, Kazu shared some of his sketches . . .

And before we go, we just had to share this with uber fabulous video of this National Book Award winner . . .

YES! It's my dear friend Jeanne Birdsall's brilliant TEDx Talk. Here she discusses writing, childhood, and 6th grade love. And to think Jeannie started writing because a boy she once knew said . . . well, watch the video and find out for yourself. If you can't see it below, or by CLICK HERE.

Wait, wha . . . ? You're still in Scotland? (Meaning, me. I'm still in Scotland.) Well, yeah. Duh. Time Machine!

The Downtown Abbey gang was in Scotland for the holidays, and so were we . . .

(Peepy and Lord Grantham, aka Hugh Bonneville, met for the first time, here.)
So then, Scotland-wise, I was HERE, and I was THERE. Now, I'm here and there . . .

Let's start with here with some museum-quality photos. Yes, we visited the National Museum of Scotland . . .
Oops. There was an accident, but everyone was okay . . .
While we were at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery we saw this painting of Professor Peter Higgs as in HIGGS Boson . . .

It was so cool to see it because in my upcoming Young Adult Novel, SEVEN DAYS DOWN, the main character's name is Higgs Boson Bing! (The book is about the last seven days of high school for a Harvard bound senior . . . and what happens when it's discovered that he cheated on his application.)

(Above: Not to brag, but that's my illustration IN THE MUSEUM. Um, anyone who wanted to draw was allowed to.)
Here's more of the museum . . .

The Museum of Childhood was full of awesome rare toys!

And now, let's visit way over there. We took a day trip to the famed Scottish Highlands. Our guide, repeatedly, repeatedly, said that the movie BRAVEHEART was an affront to the Scottish people and everything in it, including Mel Gibson, was all wrong . . .

So, here's the real deal . . .

It was great fun running around Doune Castle, the site of the filming of Monty Python and The Holy Grail.

Our guide even lent us some coconuts so we could pretend to be horses. (If this makes no sense to you, see the movie.)
Later, we went to the ness (a.k.a. "lake") . . .
But the highlight of the highlands was meeting the Hairy Coo. Them's a sort of Scottish cow. Aren't they cute?

Cows are my friends. In fact, in another lifetime, I co-wrote this video for our Dairy Farmers . . .

When our guide asked for volunteers to feed the Hairy Coo, I jumped up and down and cried, "Pick me! Pick me!"
Ah, what a wonderful time we had in Scotland. We'll be back!

Um . . . lemme see. Where were we? Here's a hint . . .

That's right! In the city where J.K. Rowling wrote HARRY POTTER(S). You might recall that she was talking to Daughter, seen above.
So then, of course we had to visit Edinburgh Castle. Behold the magnificence. Yes, Peepy is stunning, and so is the castle . . .

Edinburgh was so enchanting. We were there for the Christmas and in honor of Peepy, the whole city was lit up!

Loved the historic buildings . . .

Of course, we had to stop several times a day for snacks and shopping . . .

A tradition of great literature lives on in Edinburgh. Here's the Writer's Museum . . .

(I must admit the mannequins of Robert Burns, Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson sort of creeped me out -- especially since they talked.)

Next blog: More museums, the "Monty Python castle," Hairy Coo cows, and Higgs Boson.

In the meantime, can you guess who was the Western Washington SCBWI Person of the Week. Here's a HINT!

As you may have guessed from my last blog, I was in Edinburgh, Scotland!

Daughter was doing a semester at the University of Edinburgh. Here's her blog about Edinburgh, and here's her blog about books.
So then, Daughter is a HUGE Harry Potter fan. She made it a goal to meet Ms. Rowling, who lives in Edinburgh, as she did! When they met, Daughter told JK Rowling that because of the Harry Potter books, and an internship with Arthur Levine, it is her dream to work in children's publishing. Here's Ms. Rowling telling Daughter, "Good, we need people like you."

How did Daughter meet her literary idol? Well . . . she won a contest! The first dozen-ish to click into a literary society's website got to attend a webcast of Ms. Rowling talking about THE CASUAL VACANCY, her new novel, plus get a book (or two) autographed. So here's what I got for Christmas . . .

Years earlier, Son got to meet JK Rowling thanks, to Arthur Levine who's my editor and edited the HARRY POTTER series!

(That's Son's back in the photo.)
Being in the land where the Harry Potter books were penned, Daughter took me to The Elephant House were some of the books were written . . .

The women's restroom is famous for the messages people have left for JK Rowling . . .

Later, it was time for an-almost-midnight-tour of places that inspired the HARRY POTTER books . . .
Here's The Elephant House by night, plus another place she wrote . . .

This street is said to be the inspiration for Diagon Alley . . .

Thomas Riddell(s), father and son, lie in Greyfriar's graveyard. It is said the name was the inspiration for Tom Riddle a.k.a. LORD VOLDEMORT!!!

Professor McGonagall? Could this be who she was named for?

Greyfrier's is also famous for Greyfriar's Bobby. Pubs and statues and such honor this loyal dog . . .

And finally, we end our Harry Potter tour at this posh private school. It was the inspiration for Hogwarts . . .
Stay tuned for more adventures in Scotland, including the Highlands, Monty Python, a couple of castles, cheese toasties, and much more!!!!

In the meantime, back in the United States, Children's Book Council Diversity asked if I thought I was a diverse author. I said no. You can read why this interview with me.

I was also given a writing assignment. One of these paragraphs is tone deaf when it comes to cultural diversity. To find out which one, and why, click here and scroll down.

Some said the world was supposed to end on 12/21/12. I am so glad it didn't, because there's still lots I want to do. That said, I did manage to pack a whole lot into 2012. Let's go backward and take a look at some of the highlights. (Note: The stuff that's highlighted in a link goes to the blog about whatever I am blathering about.)
DECEMBER
Traveled to Edinburgh to visit Daughter who was attending the University for the semester. She's studying to be a children's book editor (!!!) and got me a signed copy of this for Christmas . . .

Yes! My very own autographed-by-J.K.-Rowling-copy of THE CASUAL VACANCY. Next week, I'll be blogging about how Daughter managed to get the book. But in the meantime, here's a photo of Peepy in front of her new house, formerly known as Edinburgh Castle . . .

Oh, but speaking of castles and that sort of stuff, in December, we also got to meet Downton Abbey's Lord Grantham . . .

NOVEMBER
Amish country and a conference in Pennsylvania were on the calendar for November. We had a lovely room with a view and also got to work on SEVEN DAYS DOWN, my next young adult novel for Arthur A. Levine Books/Scholastic . . .

(These red marks are notes to myself.)
OCTOBER
October was a busy, busy, busy month. We were at The Brooklyn Book Festival and The South Dakota Festival of Books, school visits in Texas, and more.
Behold, Jon Sciezka doing a guy thing as I moderated the Guys Read panel. Joseph Bruchac and Gordon Korman look on . . .

It was all very fun, but the jet lag got to me a bit. Here I am with fellow jet laggee (is that a word?) Sherman Alexie . . .

SEPTEMBER
As the space shuttle Endeavor made its way to Los Angeles aboard a modified 747, I was one of 40 people selected to cover the event for NASA. It truly was a once-in-a-lifetime event as seen HERE and HERE and HERE . . .

Here's the video of the take off. We were 500 feet away . . .
AUGUST
Anyone up for a flash mob of kid lit folk? We were! August is always a great time because of the SCBWI Summer conference!

JULY
Ah, Comic Con. Yes, it's every bit as crazy as you've heard it is. Since we wrote a book called WARP SPEED, about a Star Trek geek who gets beat up, we were on a panel . . .

July was also the American Library Association Conference. We saw Newbery winner Jack Gantos. However, he misbehaved. Badly.

JUNE
Did someone say "radio"? Yes! That was me on Jarrett Krosoczka's show Sirrus Show THE JJK REPORT . . .

Here's a video of the radio . . .
MAY
We visited Kent State in May, plus were at the Los Angles Times Festival of Books, where we ran into old friend (as in we've known him for a while) John Green. Plus, we watched Lauren Myracle get arrested . . .

APRIL
Northampton, MA is like a children's book author/illustrator mecca. I was lucky enough to spend a couple of weeks there and got to hang out with my dear friend, Jeannie Birdsall. We were on the radio together!

Peepy and I also had lunch with Mo Willems and Tony DiTerlizza . . .

We also got to visit Tony DiTerlizzi's lair and were so taken with it, and him, that we bought him this most awesome sweater . . .

MARCH
We learned the secrets of Scrivener from the creator of the program, plus found out that Austin, TX has great BBQ . . .

Visiting Vancouver was a blast. It was fun seeing Allen Say, again . . .

FEBRUARY
Jeremy Lin, the Chinese American basketball player, took the NBA by storm. Even people who didn't know what a basketball was, knew about Jeremy Lin. I wrote about him on this blog, and it was picked up by USA TODAY. Here's my dad, a three time varsity player in high school . . .
Speaking of Chinese American's, here's Ivy Ling. I wrote about for American Girl. Ivy had a cameo on the Simpsons . . .
And finally, JANUARY. As we have in the past, Peepy and I went to the Rose Parade, I (finally) updated my website, I tamed my internet addiction, and WARP SPEED got named to lots of lists!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!

Taking a blogging break this week, but still blogging. "How?" you ask? Simply. A rerun.
This is from a few years ago, but it's timely because it's about JK Rowling and I got a SIGNED COPY OF THE CASUAL VACANCY FOR CHRISTMAS THIS YEAR!!!!!! Sqeeeeee!!!!

And here's the blog from before. It's so retro that some of the links no longer link . . .
Harry Potter is huge in our house. HUGE. Routinely, we've braved the midnight lines to snare copies of the books . . .

The sight of J.K. Rowling in the United States is as rare as a husband asking for directions, and both last took place in the year 2000. However, recently it was announced that Scholastic would sponsor a J.K. Rowling Open Book Tour. The New York audience would be made up of contest winners. New Orleans and Los Angeles would be school children selected this way.
When I heard that J.K. Rowling was coming to Los Angeles, I thought OMG!OMG!IHAVETOGO!IHAVETOGO!OMG!!! I mean, J.K. Rowling and I are like best friends, sort of. Well, we did hang out together, kind of, a little, almost. If you don't believe me, it's even been semi-documented here.
So, there is a certain bond between the two of us. After all, we are both authors, and . . .
1. We are both moms.
2. We are both richer than the Queen of England.
3. We were both discovered by the same marveloooous editor, Arthur Levine.
4. We are both interviewed by Inkygirl -- click here.
(Two of the above are not true, although one of us probably doesn't need overdraft protection and the other one of us is on Inkygirl's blog.)
Via begging, threats and bribes, I managed to snag an invite for myself and one family member. EEEeeeeeeEEeeeeEEEeeeek!!!! Eeeek! Eek! Erp.

(Above: Oops. To read ticket, simply hold your computer up in front of the bathroom mirror.)
The Sorting Hat selected Son to go . . .

We were arrived EARLY so as not to be late. (This was quite a feat since I got home from NYC to LA at 2 a.m.) Alas, once at the Kodak Theater we went to the wrong place. However, when we peered through the locked doors (they were made of glass) we witnessed J.K. Rowling's press conference. (Eek!) Then it was to the theater for us. We were THE FIRST people they let it and we had the place to ourselves for a bit. Then the school kids started filling the auditorium. 1,600 of them.
Once everyone settled down, there was a short film about Harry Potter Mania before J.K. Rowling strode onto the stage. On cue, the crowd leapt to their feet and went WILD. I wanted to cry. Hundreds of kids cheering, screaming, weeping . . . for an author. How cool is that?
Jo (as I am sure she would want me to call her) sat in a golden throne upholstered in red velvet (note to self: get throne for office) and read from BOOK SEVEN. It was wonderful hearing her interpretation of the voices, her cadence, her words. Soon it was time for questions from the audience. I wish I had taken notes, but I was too enthralled to move. Also, no photos were allowed in the theater, so I will have to draw from memory . . .

The questions were brilliant and so were her responses. Things that I can sorta recall because of my memory-loss-and-jet-lag-situation in no particular order -- She would rather write seven more Harry Potter books than be Queen. English teachers are wonderful. Lupin and Tonks were the hardest deaths for her. She didn't kill people off for the fun of it. Jo has to love a book/concept before writing it. She would like to slap Snape.
After her talk, it was time for autographs. Son got permission to get in line and brought his own book, the one he had Arthur Levine sign last summer. When it was his turn, Jo paused when she saw Arthur's inscription and then spoke to Son. Eeeek!!!
Afterward, I put Arthur in my fabulous sports car and we headed to lunch. Well, okay, we headed in the wrong direction, got lost, then headed to lunch . . .

. . . and Son headed back to school where he was heralded as a hero.
Later that day, being tired and jet lagged from this, I decided to take a nap. The TV was on and I heard a promo about a news segment on Jo's LA visit. I leapt up to tape it and who should I see? J.K. Rowling and SON-- together . . .

What a magical, marvelous day.
(Above: Here's a clip from British TV.)

Peepy and I are Girl Scouts fans.

And apparently, Girl Scouts are fans of Peep(y) . . .

When I was in Louisville, KY last year, I taught writing at the local Girl Scouts Headquarters . . .

I've also spoken to Girl Scouts in my neighborhood about what it's like to be an author . . .

And earlier this year, I was featured on the Girl Scout's "Studio" website . . .

Here's a video Son and I made for the Studio . . .
So, I was honored when Girl Scouts asked if I would be one of their Storytellers. It took me about .0002 seconds to say "yes!"
This supremely talented director Alexis Morante was sent to my house to film me in my office . . .

Oops. That's not my office. And that's not me. That's E.B. White. And that's his office. My office has a few more things in it.

Here's how the video shoot went . . .

Of course, it was all about Peepy . . .
It was such fun! And I even wrote an entire novel while Alexis was shooting me . . .

Okay, so maybe it wasn't quite an entire novel. But we needed footage of me at work!
Oh, hey! Since we're talking about videos, if you know a student who'd like to meet some authors, show them this . . .

Okay, so where were illustrator/author Dan Santat and animator/author/illustrator Bob Boyle and Peepy heading?

Here are some hints . . .

If you guessed THE NORTH POLE!!! then you were wrong. If you guessed the Nokia Theater in downtown Los Angeles, you are right! We were there to see/listen to one of my favorite NPR shows, Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me! (I've been before, as Ken Burns-like-ish documented HERE.)

But first, food.
That's author Michael Reisman (left) and Bob, with Dan and Moi . . .

The place was packed with over 5,000 people and one Peep. It was the largest indoor audience ever for the show! (One time the show was in the park and maybe a million or several thousands showed up for that.) Here we all are getting seated . . .

Look! We sat near our friends author Sara Wilson Etienne and visual effects dude Tony Etienne. . .

What did we all have in common? How about this . . .

That's Emily Ecton, author and associate producer of Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me! And the other photo is of Emily Fairlie, author. (Emily is so talented that she has TWO names.)
The show was onstage, and also on screen. Can you tell which is what?

Peter Sagal, the host, looks kinda weird here. A big screen and an small iPhone camera will do that to you . . .

Here's Emily in the middle . . .
Hugh Bonneville of Downtown Abbey was the special guest . . .

(He's the Lord in the front.)
After, we went down to the stage. That's comedian/panelist Paula Poundstone in red . . .

Finding it hard to spot her? Well, how's this . . .

(I love Paula. I recall going to one of her concerts eons ago. People brought her boxes of PopTarts.)
Then it was time for the NPR party! We got super special ALENT badges . . .

(My "T" started fading, but Truly, it was there.)
The party was full of chic people and delightful treats . . .
Wait! That's Peter Sagal, the host of the show!!!!

Wait wait! It's Carl Kasell, one of THE BEST voices in radio and in the world and other places. . .

The tall distinguished man is Hugh Bonneville . . .
Finding it hard to spot him? Well, how's this - here is with the great star, Maggie Smith!

And here he is with another great star . . .

Look! It's Carl, again. This time with Bob . . .

Look some more! Here's Roy Blount Jr., another Wait Wait panelist who was not there, but who was HERE when I was there!

We had so much fun, we were the last to leave . . .

I love Ramona.

I even wrote about Ramona and Beverly Cleary for the Huffington Post.

(You can read the rest of it HERE. Or watch me read it HERE.)
But on a recent sunny Southern California day, I had another Ramona on my mind . . .

Yes! I was invited to speak about bullies at Ramona Convent in Alhambra, CA. (In WARP SPEED, the main character is bullied every day.)
Peepy and I received a wonderful, warm welcome from the students and their mascot . . .

Nearby Brightwood Elementary and Marguerita Elementary Schools were invited.

I was a student at Brightwood from first to eighth grade. That's were Mr. Glick, the "teacher torturer" in Stanford Wong Flunks Big-Time taught.

(Above: A not-so-scary Mr. Glick.)
Here are all the students . . .
And look! It's the Ramona Convent Book Club and their MARVELOUS librarian, Aniko Tegtmeier. Thank you for your gracious hospitality!

In other news, I had dinner with my black-belt-lawyer-agent Jodi Reamer recently. We made sure our clothes matched our background . . .

(Jodi was much better behaved than the last time we had dinner together.)
Speaking of dinner, I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving!

Mine was a billion times better than sniffing a stink bug! I know. I caught and smelled one. If you don't believe me, look here . . .
(Over on Facebook, I had post a photo of a bug that was plaguing me. Lots of people weighed in. You can read the stink bug discussion HERE.)
Oh! Oh! Last thing, for now, I promise. I got a space shuttle sign from HERE. Can you spot the shuttle sign?

As you might suspect, I am OBSESSED with the Endeavour Space Shuttle. And witnessed HERE and HERE.

After Pennsylvania my Peep and I went to the SCBWI - LA Illustrator's Day . . .

SCBWI stands for Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators -- the largest children's book organization in the universe. We (I say we because I'm on the board along with these amazing authors/illustrators) have over 20,000 members.

It was held at the beautiful Clairbourn School. I love that place have have spoken there a few times including the time we saw (or didn't see) Pseudonymous Bosch . . .

Another time when we spoke there, we had lunch with Academy Award winning actress Marlee Matlin. She knew my books and asked if she could join us!

(Marlee has the best complexion of anyone I've ever met.)
I've also keynoted there for SCBWI - LA Writer's Day. My editor Cheryl Klein spoke at that event, too. Here are Cheryl and I with my other editor, Arthur Levine. And here are Arthur and Cheryl having an typical editorial meeting . . .
Then there was the time we spoke to the PTA . . .

However, on this day, the day we started with before we got all nostalgic, the illustrators ruled! Here's Mark Fearing's back, and then his front . . .

The full day included portfolio reviews, agent and illustrator insights and more . . .

Peepy was so helpful. She critiqued portfolios and even sold books . . .

She worked very hard, and was pleased when her dear friend, Lee Wind, offered her some lovely refreshments . . .

We were so excited to hear author/illustrator Peter H. Reynolds speak. Last year-ish we visited his store, The Blue Bunny . . .

Peepy's dear friend, famous world traveler, Priscilla, lives there. So if you stop by, be sure to say "hello" to her!

Fun Fact: Peter also illustrates Megan McDonald's JUDY MOODY books! And Megan and I wrote for American Girl together! (She wrote the Julie books, and I wrote Ivy Ling's book.) Here's Megan . . .

Look! It's Ivy on Oprah's show!

Oops! Back to Los Angeles and Illustrator's Day. Here's Peter and his identical twin, Paul . . .

Or, wait. Maybe this is Paul, who's the CEO of FableVision, and Peter, who's founder/CEO . . .

When it came time for him, meaning Peter, not Paul, to draw, Peepy was his inspiration . . .

Then again, isn't she everyone's inspiration?

HAPPY THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE!!!!

(I actually bought this for someone one year.)

Oh, look! These books make lovely holiday gifts . . .

After being home for a couple of weeks, it was time for my last book-ish trip of the year. Kurt Vonnegut came with me.

When we got to our room, we were greeted a bag o' goodies, and a lovely (chocolate) Amish quilt! But alas, Peepy was so exhausted, she headed straight to bed . . .

Where were we? And why were we?
We in Lancaster, PA, the heart of Amish country, for the PCTELA* Conference!

*Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts
After exploring backstage, we delivered the opening keynote address to a very enthusiastic room filled with smart, attractive and witty English and Language Arts teachers!

After, everyone wanted to talk to Peepy. Here she is with PCTELA Conference Chairs Jennie Brown and Marci Stover, and PCTELA Executive Director, Bob Dandoy . . .

Later, we had a chance to visit the Tourist Information Center . . .

We already had glorious afternoon plans, but first we visited the Lancaster Central Market., the country's oldest farmer's market . .
That was perfect because we were able to stock up of fresh fruit and chocolate and then spend the afternoon finishing up SEVEN DAYS DOWN, my first Young Adult novel since this one . . .

After, we capped off the evening with a rousing dinner with PCTELA committee members and speakers, including our pal Siobhan Vivian. Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention that there was cheesecake . . .

The next day, we needed to hurry out before hurricane Sandy arrived! However, we weren't going to teave without first meeting Lisa Yee! Yes, that's right, it's ANOTHER Lisa Yee. There are actually four of us who are Facebook friends! (The Lisa Yees who are not this Lisa Yee, judged the Lisa Yee Caption Contest.)

And now, back to South Dakota!

Huh? Well, wait, that's because the South Dakota Humanities Council interviewed me about blogging! Read my true confessions HERE!
And one last thing, my website has been updated to include LOTS MORE famous authors and illustrators. How many of the 248 do you know? CLICK HERE to see them! Here are a few . . .

First of all, if you are reading this on Monday, remember to VOTE Tuesday. If you are reading this on Tuesday, VOTE today, and if you are reading this after Monday or Tuesday, I hope you remembered to vote!
This is who I am voting for . . .

CLICK HERE to see the other authors and illustrators who stand behind our President.
Speaking of elections, here's a great illustration Dan Santat did in BOBBY VS. GIRLS (ACCIDENTALLY). In the book, Bobby runs against his best friend Holly for student council rep . . .

Okay. So politics aside, after a thousand-ish weeks on the road, I was home for a couple of weeks. During that time this went on . . .

However, other stuff happened, too. Like, I signed books at the Moon Festival! It's put on by the South Pasadena Chinese-American Club. (FYI, I am Chinese American and live in South Pasadena.)

There was lots to see and do . . .

Look! It's our friend Tau Nyeu. Her book, SQUID AND OCTOPUS is sooooooo cute!!!!

In between book signings, I wrote a letter and drew pictures for RUMPUS- Letters for Kids . . .

It's the totally cool thing where you sign up and for a small fee your kid(s) or class(es) get a real letter for a children's book author, in something called a MAIL BOX, twice a month. CLICK HERE for more information.
Psst. Over there! Who's that creating those awesome bonsai plants???

He looks awfully familiar. Could he be the bonsai man in GOOD JOB, KANANI? That's one of the books I wrote for American girl -- and I had to go to Hawaii for fun, er, research . . .

(That's me and one of my instructors. Yes, I took surf lessons. Had to. Kanani surfs.)
Wait! I think it is the same man from the book, and he looks familiar because -- that's my dad and he was in the book . . .

Oh, and on another bookish note, here's a really great movie for teens and people who used to be teens . . .

And finally, there's this . . .

During our Book Festival week in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, we had some free time to explore downtown. Of course, Peepy made friends everywhere she went . . .
We visited the falls of Sioux Falls, too . . .

There were lots of great stores like Zandbroz Variety . . .

We especially liked this book shop called . . . oh, what was the book shop called? Absolutely Maybe it was called THE BOOK SHOP!!!

Peepy found some light airplane reading, and good thing because we were headed to Houston, TX next . . .

We were visiting the Long Horn state to see the students at St. John's . . .

Before we spoke we explored the libraries (they had more than one) . . .

There was a hole in the stage, and I was afraid I was going to fall into it since I am clumsy . . . but I didn't. Hooray!

Then I got ready for the first of three assemblies. Here's what it looked like backstage as everyone was coming in . . .

And here are the enthusiastic St. John's students . . .

During lunch we ate with the speaker for the lower grades, picture book author/illustrator Jon Agee!!!
Um. Was he wearing the same shirt at Sherman Alexie?

Later, Jon and I did a video interview with a student reporter . . .

(CLICK HERE to see the interview!)
That evening there was a ginormous school fundraiser at Barnes & Noble . . .

Of course, the star of the evening was Peepy. She had her photo taken dozens of times, like with the boy on the far right of the photo . . .

And speaking of contests (pretend we were), here's the winner of my Facebook caption contest . . . Paul Acampora!!!

(Seen here with his grand prize, an autographed menu signed by Loren Long, Dan Santat, and Moi.)
Next Blog: The Moon Festival in South Pasadena
In the meantime. Oops, she did it again . . .

Oh! Oh! One last thing. My next novel is a Young Adult book called SEVEN DAYS DOWN. It chronicles the last seven days of high school of a popular senior. When it's revealed that he cheated on his Harvard application, his life spirals dangerously out of control.
So then, I've been asking my facebook friends questions like, "What one thing do you remember most about your high school graduation ceremony?"
Over 150 shared their experiences, and I loved reading through them. Here's what they had to say.

WARNING: THIS PARTICULAR BLOG IS A TOTAL MASHUP OF MISHMASH.
Where were we? Ah, yes! The South Dakota Festival of Books.
We had just met author/Rolling Stone critic/NPR commentator Will Hermes. It was pretty clear that Will had something important he wanted to ask Peepy. That's right. Would she agree to do an interview with him? Peepy graciously agreed, giving Will the interview of his career . . .

(To read Will Hermes' exclusive interview with Peepy, look for the special Rolling Stone Special Peep Edition, on your newsstand sooner or later.)
So then, of course, South Dakota Public Broadcasting, wanted an interview too. Can you blame them?

Next it was my turn to be interviewed by Karl Gehrke. You can listen to us here. (It sounded like I was hyped up on coffee. Um. Maybe I was.)
Wait, wait, don't tell me! Why was Roy Blount Jr. snapping my photos? Because he was interviewed, too. Here are photos I took of him.

Here's a link of when Peepy and I went to Wait, Wait . . . Don't Tell me!
Fun fact: Our friend Emily Ecton is one of the show's producers. Here she is dining with BatPeep . . .

Emily, under the name Emily Fairlie, has a fantastic book coming out soon. Check out the first blurb.
Oops. Back to South Dakota. (As you can clearly see, this blog is written without the guidance of an editor.) So then, Roy and Peepy had a major argument over string theory and advanced astrophysics, until Roy realized that Peepy was right . . .
The next day there was another radio interview! This time with Mix 97.3 . . .

(Photo credit - the clear ones: Ryan Woodard.)
Immediately after, we hurried to speak at a tea for over almost 200 American Girl fans (including the dolls). The room was packed!

(Photo credit - the clear ones: Tina Nicholas Coury)
It was awesome, and the girls wrote me messages on these paper surf boards!

After, we signed a zillion books . . .

From there, we spoke at the library . . .

That night, dinner was delish . . .

We capped off the evening with a traveling author's dream come true -- a hotel with a public washer and dryer! (I was on the road for about 463 years or days-ish, more or less.)

The next morning we opened the newspaper and read about ourselves. Twice!

(The girl in the first photo is reading ALOHA, KANANI.)
Later, we flew an F-18 while the news crews looked on . . .
Huh? Oh. It wasn't a real F-18. It was a simulator. (And that's a good thing because I crash landed in the desert.) Why was I flying an F-18? Because, not to boast, but I WAS PART OF THE NASA SOCIAL MEDIA GROUP COVERING THE SPACE SHUTTLE ENDEAVOR!!!!!!!!! (Um. Here's proof.)
Wait? What? I thought we were in South Dakota?

Well, yes. but right now we are shuttling over to Edwards Air Force Base when we were there to see the shuttle land and take off for LAX . . .

But Lisa, you were tracking the Endeavour for NASA a few weeks ago, right? Yes, but this past weekish, Endeavour journeyed through the streets of Los Angeles!!!
Because my recent blogs are all part of one continuous looooong road trip, and I didn't have room before, I am post blogging some Endeavour stuff. So here's more of the NASA behind-the-scenes we were privy to as we go back to the future of the past while here in the present . . .
These are space shuttle tiles . . .
These are not . . .

Eeeeeek . . . LOOK! Aliens! Space aliens!!!!

Oh, wait. That's Dan Santat and Loren Long. They took part in my facebook caption contest. We had almost one hundred entries, and Lisa Yee, Lisa Yee, and Lisa Yee* picked the winner!
To find out who won this lovely/autographed/drawn-on menu from Barney's Beanery, CLICK HERE.

*The judges were facebook friends of mine who are also named "Lisa Yee.")
And now, back to more super secret maybe NASA stuff . . .

After panelling and chatting and chewing in Brooklyn . . .

. . . it was time to head to the South Dakota Festival of Books. I was set for another boring plane ride, when look who I bumped into in Minneapolis -- we were going to the same place!

Yes! That's Sherman Alexie. When we last saw Sherman he was doing this . . .
We were both jet lagged, but I don't think it was too noticeable . . .
Even though he was tired, I woke Sherman up and asked him to sign something for Son's teacher and others. I also asked him to sign a check for me, but he refused.

The South Dakota Festival of Books takes place in various parts of the state. We were in Brookings to speak to the 4th graders at Camelot Intermediate School. Look how big they are!

Oh, wait. That's not a student, that's the principal, Dave Fiedler. (So cool when you have a fun principal!)
Here's a before and after of speaking to the 4th graders . . .

Later, Dave gave me a tour of his wonderful school. I'd never seen sinks OUTSIDE of the restrooms, but was told that it speeds things up, thwarts goofing around, and you can see who washes their hands. Makes sense to me!

As I was touring the campus, I found myself in a math problem!!!

That evening it was off to hear Sherman kick-off the festival. He spoke IN AN ARENA . . .
Here's Sherman with Pam Merchant and me backstage. Pam was kind enough to drive me all over South Dakota because I get lost easily. For that reason alone, vote for Pam!

The next day it was off to Sioux Falls, which is a different place than Sioux City, not that anyone I know would confuse the two. Ah hem.

(Above is the goodie bag that greeted me in Sioux Falls.)
You've heard of Men in Black, right?

Well, I got to have dinner with their literary dopplegangers -- Men in Plaid. It was wonderful seeing Newbery/National Book Award-ish Gary Schmidt (on right) again! The last time we saw him he was with the lovely and mysterious BatPeep. And who's that other plaid clad fellow? Why, it's none other than Rolling Stone critic/NPR commentator/author Will Hermes . . .

After eating at an Italian restaurant with schnitzel on the menu, we headed to the authors' reception to be recepted . . .

We were so fascinating that we made the news . . .

Twice . . .

NEXT BLOG: Peepy (and Lisa) on South Dakota Public radio, sparring with Roy Blount Jr. and more from South Dakota. Plus, Will Hermes gets the interview of his career.
Oh wait! One more thing. What's that? Why it's a handwritten letter I wrote for The Rumpus - Letters For Kids.

Yes, your kid(s), or you(s), can get two actual letters in an old-fashioned thing called "the mailbox" each month from actual KidLit authors. CLICK HERE to find out more.
And finally, speaking of writing, I had a caption contest over on my facebook wall. Here's the photo of Eight-Books-Out-This-Year-Alone Dan Santat and NY TIMES #1 Besteller Loren Long . . .

(I'll post the winning caption, along with the fabulous prize, on the next blog.)

Hello? Where are we now? Why, even though we've been here, blog-wise we're there, in New York.
How does that work? Well, we had just had a wonderful day at the Brooklyn Book Festival, and then it was time for EATING FOOD WITH LITERARY PEOPLE.
Let's start with multi-Caldecott-ian winner Paul O. Zelinsky. He's the newest SCBWI board member. (I'm on the board, too.) Paul and I both suffer from memory loss, and we couldn't remember if we had ever met before. However, that did not stop him from treating his favoirte Peep to coffee and a muffin!

Then, that night, it was off to Park Slope to dine with my editors, Arthur Levine and Cheryl Klein . . .

It was Cheryl's birthday the day before so Peepy bought her a handmade mug!!!

(It's possible that the mug was from Arthur and Peepy was taking credit for it.)
Arthur also had a present for me . . .

Yes! A sock monkey. Eons ago when I was writing MILLICENT MIN, GIRL GENIUS (which just celebrated its 9th birthday), I could write without a sock monkey. (Don't you hate when that happens?) So Arthur sent me an imaginary one.
The next day it was lunch with author Phil Blinder and editor/author Kevin Lewis. I met them at their loft, and Kaniss, their puppy greeted Peepy. Um, for a while it looked like we might stage a remake of THE HUNGER GAMES . . .

Everyone survived, and we went on to have a great meal! Speedy Romeos. (That's the name of the restaurant -- and/or the two guys.)

Dinner with my agent was that night. I gave myself plenty of time to get lost -- something I can count on happening when in NY.

I got to Koi, the restaurant almost two hours early. So that gave me time to go to the library and wander around the area . . .

We made sure to visit the Children's Center and visit our dear friend Winnie-the-Pooh, and his friends . . .

(As some of you know, I have the second largest collection of Poohs in America. Most of my collection resides in the White River Winnie-the-Pooh Museum in Canada.)
Then we admired the rest of the Children's library . . .

There was still time before our dinner, so we hung out at Bryan Park, where there appeared to be a mass hoe down happening, and other stuff, too . . .

My Writers House agent, Jodi Reamer, and Peepy, along great, for the most part . . .

When we last saw Jodi, we were in jail at Disneyland . . .

Later, we hopped on our space shuttle . . .
(CLICK HERE. if the video above is invisible.
We were headed to Sioux Falls for the South Dakota Festival of Books. But I'll tell you all about that next blog.
In the meantime, since we're being all authorly and agently and editorly (but clearly not proofreaderly), I want to tell all the published authors out there about this . . .
A couple of years ago, I wrote a letter to Alan Silberberg when he was selected as the Thurber House Children's Writer-in-Residence. He went on to win the Sid Fleischman Humor Award, something I won in 2004 when I was the first recipient.
Later, Donna Gephart went on to be selected at the Thurber House Children's Writer-in-Residence. She also won the Sid Fleischman Humor Award.
And then after that, Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy was selected as the Thurber House Children's Writer-in-Residence, and then won the Sid Fleischman Humor Award. No wait, that hasn't happened yet, but here are some of the other authors who lived in James Thurber's home.
Here's what happened when I had lunch -sort-of-maybe-kinda with Colin Firth . . .

Oops. Sorry for that Darcy digression. Anyway, if you are a published children's book author and would like to be considered for the Writer-in-Residence position, CLICK HERE for more information.
Here's the letter I wrote to Alan, re-engineered for the next Thurber House Children's Writer-in-Residence . . .
Dear YOUR NAME HERE,
Congratulations on being named this year's Thurber House Children's Writer-in-Residence. I remember when I got the call. It was sooooo exciting! I can't believe that last year at this time I was living in Thurber House. I just know your residency is going to be great.
Since you asked (okay, you didn't, but I'm going to do this anyway), here are some helpfulhintssuggestionsthings to make the most of your month living in James Thurber's childhood home:
The house is TOTALLY cool . . .

(That's me and my friend Julia deVillers. If you have a friend visit you, Thurber House rules are that you must wear matching outfits at all times.)
Feel free to explore and soak up the atmosphere. You get your own swell two-bedroom apartment in the attic where the bed fell on James's father--AND the rest of the house (which is a museum during the day) is all yours at night!

(Above: James Thurber's room where James and I wrote, though not at the same time)
Beware of the (friendly) ghost . . .

Don't go running. You may fall flat on your face and end up in the hospital looking like a color palatte . . .

Write in the garden. So nice to be sitting among the dogs!

Enjoy the hospitality. There are lots of friendly people in Columbus, OH.
Get ready for enthusiastic Thurber writing camp authors . . .

(Ummm . . . it took us a while to figure out the screen, but once that was up, we really got going!)
Have fun at the Dowd Center. Those kids will amaze you with their creativity. Earlier this year Scholastic donated 500 books to their library . . .

Walk around town (don't run) and take in the sights. There's art everywhere! . . .

The Columbus Main Branch is only a couple blocks away . . .

If you can catch a ride, check out the award-winning Worthington Libraries . . .

Watch your Peep at all times, she could get in dangerous situations . . .

The amazing women who run Thurber House are wonderful . . .

The men aren't so bad either . . .

Here are the stairs to your own private writer's apartment . . .

And here's your official plaque . . .

So then. If you are a published children's author, or know of one, check this out. Maybe you (or they) be the next Thurber House Children's Writer-in-Residence.
Oh, and speaking of books, my friend Mike Jung just had his first-ever launch party!!! You can see/hear about it HERE!
The Olympics were here, but we missed it. However, we did see Kate and William watering the lawn . . .

So then, last blog I promised a video of the SCBWI Summer Conference Flash Mob. Here's what everyone looks like when they are perfectly still . . .

And here's what they look like when they are flash mobbing!!!
The whole thing was masterminded by the Newbery winner Linda Sue Parkdan and her pal, writer Jolie Stekly. Here they are at dinner. Peepy is assuring them that the flash mob will be fine and that there is nothing to worry about . . .

CLICK HERE to read Linda Sue's blog about how they pulled this amazing fete together!!!!

I know! Flash mobs make me hungry, too. So let's look at some photos of author/illustrator-type people having lunch, shall we?
Here's my frequent Lunch Pal, Dan Santat (on right) with Ethan Long, who was visiting from Orlando . . .

Then, Ken Min, invited me to dine with him and Nathan Fillion, so how could I refuse? (Nathan and I have history.)

Other KidLit folk heard about it and joined us . . .

(Dan Krall, Ethan Long, Mary Peterson, Martha Brockenbrough, Nathan Fillon, Julia Shahin Collard, Sara Wilson Etienne, Paige Pooler, Rita Crayon Huang, Dan Santat, Ken Min, Wilson Swain and Karyn Raz)
But wait! What was that? School has started??? It seems like it was just summer, and you know what that means, right?

Correct! Summer writing workshops given by Moi. Here we are at the South Pasadena Public Library . . .
My writing students were looking at my Moo cards. Moo what? This is Moo . . .

(Tiny little cards that I give out as business cards/bookmarks/calling cards.)
So then, I suggested that everyone to get comfortable to write, and they did . . .

A couple of days after that, we headed to one of the oldest indie children's bookstores in the country, Once Upon a Time, in Montrose, CA, for another writing workshop . . .

The kids were soooooo talented!!!

I love Once Upon a Time. They always give me stickers!

It's always great to visit an indie bookstore, isn't it?

Next up, we'll visit an indie bookstore in Pasadena that just celebrated their one year birthday in Peeptastic style!!!

Last week one of my favorite indie book/toy/craft stores, Little Junebugs celebrated their one year anniversary . . . and we were there! (I mean, really, you'd think that Peepy would miss a Peep party??)

Who are those attractive witty people? Why it's Little Junebugs owners, Courtney Collins and Brian Flanagan . . .

Of course, with the party it being PEEP-themed, Peepy was in her element.
Dan Santat and I signed copies of BOBBY THE BRAVE (SOMETIMES) and other books we created!

And lookit! Why, it's author/illustrator Ethan Long . . .
Now then, what exactly is Little Junebugs, you ask, or I ask, or someone over there asks. Why, it's may things, like a whole lot of children's books . . .
And toys . . .
And cool stuff and crafty stuff . . .

And for the anniversary party, there were professional photos of all the party Peeps!

(That's Courtney and me with Peepy.)
And everyone made Peep picture frames!

Of course, Dan and Ethan showed off their mad illustrator-ly skills . . .

Speaking of skills, you gotta see this!!! The last time I saw Mark Crilley, he drew a picture for my favorite doctor. This time, he drew this amazingly realistic picture -- and it's gone viral!!! Is there a doctor in the house?
Oops, let's return from the digression and head back to the party. All the fun made Peepy thirsty. So the kind handsome bartender created a drink just for her. Behold, the (non-alcoholic) Peep-tini!!!
Now fabulosity like this doesn't just happen. It takes a lot of work, as you can see HERE.
HAPPY 1st ANNIVERSARY, LITTLE JUNEBUGS!!!!

And finally here's a fun Q and A I did with for the South Dakota Festival of Books!!! (Don't read it if you are a fan of fine Haiku.)

Okay, first the "phew" news. Puppy survived. "Survived what?" you ask. Well, this . . .

Yes, she ate NINE brownies and had to go to the dog hospital and even stay 24-hours to make sure she was okay, which she is. Now. Raisins, I hear, are also toxic to dogs. Book are not though . . .

Wait! What's that? GUESS WHO IS GOING TO WELCOME THE ENDEAVOUR SPACE SHUTTLE RIDE TO CALIFORNIA UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL and have an official NASA clearance and stuff? Here's a hint . . .

I know!
Squeeeeeeeee!!!! I'll be facebooking and tweeting it as it happens! In the meantime, CHECK THIS OUT! (I once got an awesome private tour of JPL (Jet Propulsion Lab), but this, this is a dream come true.)
Speaking vehicles, just this morning I boarded my Time Machine to go back to gorgeous Santa Barbara. We've been there before, although things did get out of hand when some grownups behaved badly. . .

(CLICK HERE to find out what went on.)
But another time we were in Santa Barbara getting dizzy with other authors and kids, and everyone behaved . . .

During our last visits, we didn't have time to see the renowned local indie bookstore, Chaucer's. So this time, we made it a priority, and are so happy we did!

(I love that books even line the floors!)
The children's book department was wonderful . . .
Peepy made lots of new friends . . .

Later we ate at La Super-Rica Taqueria, a place recommended by Julia Child, and the NY TIMES . . .

It was worth the wait!
Wait! Wait! What? Who's that? See if you can tell?

(This super fun worksheet was brought to you from the mind of Jarrett J. Krosoczka!!! If you'd like to download this for your class, library, personal collection of authors when they kids fliers, etc., CLICK HERE.)
Oops. That was a digression. Let's board our Time Machine and head to the main branch of the Santa Barbara Public Library . . .

Of course, we veered straight to the children's department . . .

Peepy loved it there, and looked to see where her epic fashion memoir will be (once she writes it) . . .
Ah! An indie bookstore, tacos and the library. Perfect day.
Hawaii? Did someone say "Hawaii"??? Yes, BOBBY VS. GIRLS (ACCIDENTALLY) is on Hawaii's Nene Awards Book Recommendation List!
We love Hawaii and even set our American Girl KANANI books there!

And finally, guess who's the USC Alumni Author this month, and what five books Lisa, er, she would take with her if she was stranded on a desert island???

Franklin is a fourth grader with a big imagination and an alter ego named Frankie Pickle; fifth graders Lydia and Julie are best friends who observe “the popular girls” at their school to discover the code of popularity; and Robert is a normal fourth grader who gets into crazy situations! These hilarious characters spring from the minds of authors Amy Ignatow (The Popularity Papers), Eric Wight (Frankie Pickle series) and Lisa Yee (Bobby the Brave [Sometimes]), all of whom have an uncanny knack for writing laugh-out-loud funny, illustrated chapter books that elementary school kids love. Well, the big news is that this week I will be part of the NASA Social to witness the Space Shuttle Endeavour arrival in the Mojave Desert!

(Photos courtesy of NASA.)
You can bet that my next blog will be all about that!!!
Next Sunday, I'll also be at the Brooklyn Book Festival. I'll be on a humor panel at 10 a.m., plus moderating the Guys Read Panel at 1 pm. More details are at the bottom of this blog, along with a link to the South Dakota Festival of Books, where I'll be the following week.

(Um. That's the GUYS READ: THE SPORTS PAGE. There was some shininess going on when I took the photo.)
In canine news, my dog is (in)famous. She made the hilarious DogShaming website!!!! To celebrate, she did this . . .

Now, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking, "Hey, Lisa. Isn't it that time of year again? You know, time for your Annual Summit with your Writers House agent at Disneyland?"

Well, you're right! For the past 12 or four years, Jodi Reamer and I have gone to Disneyland to, er, talk about publishing, and the economy, and books, and business.
Year One.

Year Two.

Year Three.

Year Four . . .

Fun fact: I once DROVE THE MONORAIL!!!!!

(When I worked at Walt Disney World as a Writer/Producer, they had this program for management called So You Are Burnt Out But We Want You To Have Fun So How's About You Do Different Things in the Parks. (Or maybe it was called something else.) Anyway, that's how I got to drive the monorail. And if you've heard the rumor that I overshot my stop and it was one of the rare occasions where the monorail had to back up, well . . . well . . . um.)
The Peter Pan ride is one of my favs . . .

It was a hot day, but still we climbed the Matterhorn . . .
Jodi had never been to Tom Sawyer's Island! It's now called Pirate's Lair, but it will forever be Tom Sawyer's Island to me. As a kid (and an adult) I loved running around and exploring the island.
I would like a treehouse office, please.
Not only is Jodi and agent and a lawyer, but she's a black belt, and apparently a stuntwoman/Gold medal gymnast . . .

We found the treasure. That's right. I'm rich now.
Sadly, this knight took my money, but Jodi and I were the ones thrown in jail!

Peepy loved Toontown . . .
We headed to California Adventure for a New York Adventure. (Just checking to see if you are still awake.)

I LOVED the new Cars Land!!!

(The cones served food in . . . cones.)

Ah, another successful Annual Summit!!!

What's that? Where are you?

It began a short while ago. My friend Linda Bernfeld, who's husband works with NASA, sent me a link to a NASA website. (Linda knows I like science, and even wrote a book that includes a lot about Star Trek vs. Star Wars vs, Batman.)

It seems they were looking for people who were involved in social media -- Twitter, Facebook, blogs. Those selected would have unprecedented access to the space shuttle Endeavour's arrival via a 747 carrier at Edwards Air Force Base.
I thought I had no chance, but applied along with over 2,000 people. But then, this happened . . .

The event took place over three days, but this blog will focus on Day 2, the day Endeavour arrived at Edwards Air Force Base/Dryden Fight Center in California. (I'll blog the other days later.)
That said, I need to tell you that on Day One, I got lost in the desert. I was sooooo upset about being late, I cried. NASA Social Media/ Dryden Flight Center knew I was lost and even Tweeted trying to find me . . .

(Um. Ignore that bottom Brussels sprouts Tweet.)
Luckily a nice Sparklett's truck driver gave me directions.
The next day, Day Two, I was determined not to be late. We were supposed to arrive at 8 a.m. I got there at 6:40 a.m. and was the first of Nasa Social Media to arrive . . .

The only others there were a TV crew from CBS. While we waited, Peepy made new friends . . .

As before, our car was search by a bomb-sniffing dog. Only this time THERE WAS A BOMB IN MY CAR!!!!!! Okay, so it was a smoke bomb. And the military put it there with my permission to test their dog. Still, it was quite exciting. The dog was to heel if he found the bomb . . .

Once inside we were given our schedule. Here it is, along with the witty, charming and attractive NASA Social Media-ites, all listening to Peepy go over the day's agenda . . .

The head of the California Science Center, where Endeavour will make a permanent home, spoke to us, and then we boarded a bus to the runway . . .

Here's a Daily Trojan article about Endeavour and the science center, which is next door to my alma mater, USC. And speaking of USC, in case you missed it, who's the USC Alumni author of the month with her list of Five Must-Read Books??? CLICK HERE to find out the mystery person who gets lost in cars and in books.
Oops. Digression. Back to the Endeavour arrival.
Were we excited? Well, duh, yeah!!!

The desert was hot. I forgot to check the temperature when we were out there, but I think it was about 147 degrees, maybe more. Here's the 5:53 p.m. temperature . . .

We marched down a rocky road to the runway . . .

There were some false sightings and everyone got all exciting thinking it was Endeavor, but it wasn't . . .

To pass the time, NASA Social Media-ites took photos of a celebrity . . .

Then we spotted the real thing! The 747 carrier with the Endeavor piggybacked on it did a flyover first . . .

It was a beautiful site.
Before we could catch our breath, Endeavour came right toward us for the landing. We were just 500 feet away. Squeeeeee!!!!!!

Yes, it was a VIP (Very Important Peep) viewing!!! On the bus ride back, everyone was flushed with excitement and sunburn . . .

Our NASA Social Media group even scooped the traditional press!

But that wasn't the end of the day. I'll blog in more detail next, but we also met the pilot of the 747 Carrier and got to go inside the 747 itself . . .

So then. How would I rate this experience? Well, honestly, it was one of the highlights of my life, even ranking higher than the time Son did the dishes without me having to ask him.

So, when last blogging, we saw THE SPACE SHUTTLE LAND 500 FEET FROM US . . .

While I was writing the blog, I was watching the Endeavour on television in my motel room . . .

Why were we "this" close? Because we were part of the NASA Social Media group for the Endeavour!

This blog, we'll show an exclusive VIP (Very Important Peep) video of THE SPACE SHUTTLE TAKE OFF 500 FEET FROM US. But before we get to that, there's this . . .

After watching the Endeavour land, we were in for more excitement. We got to see the 747 carrier and space shuttle up close . . .

Stephanie Stilson, flow director and transition director for the space shuttles. spoke to our NASA Social group . . .

Then WE GOT TO GO INSIDE THE 747 Shuttle Carrier. Wheeeeeeee!!!!!
The next morning we had to get to Edwards Air Force Base really, really, really early. Like before we went to security clearance, including having our car searched by a bomb-sniffing dog . . .

There were lots of television crews there, but the NASA Social group got to go in before them! Why? Most likely because there was a Peep with us.

We boarded a bus out to the desert landing strip, and along the way saw the sunrise over the Endeavour . . .

When we got to the runway, um. Someone had to go to the restroom. Only, it was far, far, far away -- so it wouldn't be in any of our shots, or the TV/Newspaper/Magazine shots . . .

While we were waiting, there was a celebrity sighting!

Then an even bigger celebrity arrival! Endeavour was heading our way . . .

Can you believe this???? The Endeavour, piggybacked on the 747 carrier that we had been on, was taking off a mere 500 feet from us, and we were right there!!!!!
Oh man, it was so beautiful. Photos and video can't even get close to the experience of watching it in person. Truly, this was a once-in-a-lifetime event. Thank you, NASA.
WE INTERRUPT THIS SHUTTLE NEWS FOR CHILDREN'S BOOK NEWS . . . Guess who will be hosting the marvelous 2013 Children's Choice Book Awards?
Answer: Me! (I got the news about being accepted for the NASA Social, and being a part of the Children's Choice Awards within 24 hours. It was a good day.))
The Children's Choice Book Awards is the only national book awards program where winning titles are selected by young readers of all ages.

AND NOW BACK TO THE SPACE SHUTTLE ENDEAVOUR . . .
Mere seconds after we stopped weeping, we began Tweeting and FaceBooking and getting the word/photos/video out . . .

We sent out our reports on-site, on the bus, and then back in our media room . . .

NASA Social Media even beat out the traditional press . . .

Speaking of traditional press, NBC-TV Los Angeles did a segment on our NASA group. Our fearless leader, John Yembrick was interviewed (as was my Peep, sort of) . . .

As it was happening, I Tweeted, and coincidentally, my friend Bob Boyle and his wife Teri were watching TV . . .

Even though it was days ago that Endeavour took off and flew over California . . .

. . . I still get goosebumps thinking about it, my experience, and the wonderful friends I made. John Yembrick, with an assist from Cindy Chin, took this photo of us aboard the Endeavour's 747 carrier . . .

Special thanks to Lisa Mattox, Social Media Lead, NASA Dryden Flight Research Center and John Yembrick, NASA Social Media Manager, and the rest of the wonderful NASA team who hosted us -- you made this girl's dream come true.

Our last blog found us in the desert flying high (practically) aboard the space shuttle Endeavour . . .

This blog takes us from There to Here . . .

That's right! We were in New York for the quite bodacious Brooklyn Book Festival . . .
Peepy and I headed to the Green Room to get ready for our panel and to apologize to our Scholastic publicist, Lauren Felsenstein . . .

(That's Lauren, on the right, with newly minted Scholastic Publicity assistant Rachel Howard. The apologies were because when I landed in NY, I was beyond exhausted, having not slept in two days. So, I emailed Lauren and said I would have to miss anything going on on Sunday. Um. Oops. I had meant Saturday. Sunday was the book festival.)
Our moderator, Lisa Graff, and fellow panelist Amy Ignatow were hanging out in the Green Room, too . . .

As (the other) Lisa prepped in the glow of literary-ness, we spied our friend E.B. Lewis (again) sharing a snack with Peepy. Then we were instructed to storm the stage, or at least head toward it . . .
Our panel was on humor and though we tried to be high minded, I won't deny that the words "fart" and "barf," were mentioned more than once. (FYI, the person who is not Lisa, Lisa or Amy is Eric Wight.)

(I had no idea I that my arms flailed around that much.)
We had a blast! After, agent Barry Goldblatt, tried to talk Peepy into signing with him for her epic fashion memoir/astrophysics tell all . . .

(As you can guess, Peepy is being courted by all the top agents. She hasn't made a decision yet, but when she does, we will let you know.)
Next, we got ready for the Guys Read panel. Um, but Lisa, you say, or he says, or she says, or someone says," you are not a guy."
True.
However, I write lots of books with guy protagonists, I am not afraid of snakes, and I don't get grossed out easily, so that qualified me to be the moderator!
Here's our panel . . .

Er. That wasn't the panel. That was a photo Lauren accidentally took of the floor. THIS is our panel . . .

(Despite what the name tags say, from left to right, is Gordon Korman, Jon Scieszka, Angelina Jolie, and Joseph Bruchac.)
(Find the photo of Gordon and I wearing our good clothes. And this is the time Gordon and I tried to decimate each other while Jon cheered us on.)
It was standing room only, and when I introduced everyone I made the dudes do guy-ish things . . .

It was so fun! I asked math questions (not), and even things my facebook friends had suggested. For example, fellow author Peter Lerangis suggested I ask, "Who does your hair?" (They are all bald-ish.)

Later, there was a book signing session . . .

I also ran into a lot of friends at the festival, like scary (if you don't believe me, check out his serial killer novel) Barry Lyga . . .

Paul Acampora was there with his daughter!

(That's not his daughter, that's Peepy in the photo.)
John Bemelmans Marciano was kicking back with friends, and Dan Yaccarino was upside down. . .
Oh, and look, it's (I'm not sure) . . .

But I know who that is! It's Wendy Mass!!!

The festival was spread out and the weather was PERFECT . . .

The bookmobile had a wonderful selection of titles . . .

For more KidLit fun at the Brooklyn Book Festival, check out the Publishers Weekly photo roundup and see if you can spot the peep!
NEXT BLOG: Dining and snacking with authors and illustrators. Plus, THE HUNGER GAMES, almost . . .

In the meantime, here's a video (with a very unattractive screen grab) that includes me touching Jon and Gordon's bald heads . . .
