1. Drawing on my new Samsung Galaxy Note

Here's a short little video of how I drew this character above using my Samsung Galaxy note. I colored the creep in Photoshop but all of it was drawn on the tablet.

2. Looking back

Here is an illustration I did years ago when I was starting my art career. I never sold this one, but it sure looks fun.

3.

I just had a little bit of free time so I created this monster tonight. Just my own little fun project that kept me from working on projects that I really need to finish.

4. Sketchbooks for SALE!

I didn't really think this would take off and become such a huge hit, but my sketchbooks are selling a bit faster than I was ready for. I have these wonderful hardback sketchbooks that I am selling here LINK on my web store. I draw an image on the front cover and the I draw a nice sketch on the inside of the book and leave it up to you to fill up the other 160 pages of the book with your wonderful drawings. I don't take commissions on the sketches, you get what you get. Sort of like buying a pack of trading cards, you just get surprised. Here are some of the images that I have drawn on the books that have already sold.

You can order your sketchbook by going to my web store here LINK.

5. Spiderbite Animation

Here is an animation I created for my Spiderbite app based on my book Drawing With Letters: The Haunted Creeps and Ghastly Ghouls of Spiderbite. The app is now available on the iPad and the iPhone and this animation is tucked away somewhere on the inside of the haunted home known as Spiderbite. This is my longest animation to date and was a lot of fun to create, but a lot of work to. It seems with every video I attempt there is a great deal of learning, guessing, trying and failing but it always works out in the end....most of the time. Here is a LINK to the book if you are interested in seeing that too.
-Steve Harpster

p.s.- the app is also called Drawing With Letters: The Haunted Creeps and Ghastly Ghouls of Spiderbite and is available for the iPhone and iPad for $1.99

7. Monster Mail

If you are short you will more than likely be assigned a PO Box that is up high and hard to get to and if you are tall you will get a box located down low.

11. Godzilla vs. Godzilla

When the U.S. attempted to make a Godzilla movie I was really excited. I went and saw it opening night. Um, the only problem with the movie....it wasn't Godzilla! First of all, this might seem sexist but I always thought of Godzilla as a male creature not a female. Godzilla is also a man made creation that comes back to haunt man. It's as reckless as a tornado, earthquake or an atomic weapon. It has no regard for man. Godzilla simply destroys the city then returns to the ocean leaving the people shocked and feeling small and helpless. In the U.S. version Godzilla is a doting mom, caring for her brood of eggs as she gently runs through the city dodging military aircraft. Oh, and one more thing, no nuclear fire breath....really?

12. Just drawing and drawing

So this is something that I enjoyed drawing, but I have no idea why I drew it. I don't know why the monster is holding a book and an iPad. I don't know why the kid is running form the monster and I don't know why the monster is so happy. Anyways, the fun is just drawing even if you don't know why or what it means.

13. Graeter's Dragon

For those unfortunate souls out there that have never had Graeter's ice cream I really feel for you. It is the best ice cream on this planet. Now I love ice cream, and I eat all kinds, but when I want something really amazing I get Graeter's. If you are ever just driving through Columbus or Cincinnati make sure to treat yourself to a Graeter's cone.

14. Spiderbite for iPad and iPhone

Here are some scenes from my NEW app Drawing With Letters: The Haunted Creeps and Ghastly Ghouls of Spiderbite. Only a $1.99 for the iPad and iPhone

* Tap on the different rooms of the haunted house
* Great sound effects and animations
* Explore rooms of the haunted house
* Discover a fun animation about the haunted house known as Spiderbite
* Step by step animated drawing steps

I am really proud of this app. I want to thank Johnny Byrnes for all his hard work programming this app and for his awesome work on all the sound effects. I created both the book and the app at the same time and I was really overwhelmed working on both at the same time, but they both turned out amazing.

16. Spiderbite is OUT!

Here is a short promo video I created for Spiderbite my newest how-to-draw book for kids. This book actually started out as an app but as I created the characters I just saw a book in my head. So I not only created the app, but a book at the same time. Oh, and this project started in August...so I had only weeks to complete this project. Needless to say I am a bit worn from the whole project, but I am also very excited, because I believe this book and app are amazing. Here is a short promo for the book below-

Here is a LINK to my web store where the book can be purchased. The book costs only $6.95 and I will sign it to whomever you like and draw a fun picture on the inside cover for you. If you know a young aspiring artist this book will be a huge hit with them.

Here is a sample page from the book:

18. My process of working on a page.

If you click on the posted image you can see it larger. This is an example of my working process for a book I worked on last spring.

step 1 - design: Getting all the elements on the page. getting all four dinos on each page wasn't easy.

step 2- Proportions: Now I need to make sure the dino sizes are all consistent. I'm also looking at the pose and movement. How will they all look together.

step 3- Details: The main detail is personality when I get to this step. So if they are afraid not only does their face show this, but also their body language. Notice they peak around the corner of the hallway, they also clump together as they head down the stairs to see what is down there.

step 4- Ink: I do all my drawing, inking and coloring in photoshop. I work on a Cintiq so that makes it much easier. Whether inking digitally or on paper, don't trace your lines! DO NOT TRACE YOUR LINES! It takes all the movement and life when you trace and will make your drawing look stiff. get loose with your inking, the only way to do this is lots of practice.

step 5- coloring...not much to say here. One thing I will do when coloring is go back and make corrections to my line art if I need to. Sometimes you notice mistakes so allow yourself to go back a fix those mistakes in your process.

Thanks,
Steve
