Oil On Hard Board 10x10
This painting began as a happy accident. A few weeks ago I went to my favorite flea markets in Irvine CA. It is held the first Sunday of each month. I get there early and poke through every booth searching for something that inspires me. On this Sunday I found the bottle, the little oil can (I collect these) and the sea urchin shell. When I got home I unwrapped them and placed them on the kitchen counter. As soon as I saw them all together I realized that together they made a very pleasing arrangement. The texture of the shell against the smooth glass and the slightly discolored corroded metal of the oil can all worked in harmony.

It has been a while since I have been able to complete a small painting for my blog. For the last few months I have been hard at work on several large commission pieces. Now that they are completed I can turn to my small works again. I have missed doing them.
I have been collecting vintage tin toys for years and have amassed quit a collection. Many are spaced themed. I especially like ray guns. Came across this little wind-up bird a while ago. Stands about 4” tall. When you wind it up it hops and flaps its wings. Thought it was very cute and knew as soon as I saw it that I had to paint it.

It’s been a while since I have done a painting of a full Hydrangea. I think most artists have a handful of subject they like to revisit – it just makes you feel good to go there and lose yourself in the familiar.

A few weeks ago one of my neighbors brought me several amaryllis bulbs. I figured when the weather got a little cooler I would find a good spot and plant them. In the mean time I was storing them under a little work bench in the backyard. To my surprise one of the bulbs started to bloom. This little blossom was so delicate and only lasted a few days but that was enough time to create this painting.

Agapanthus also know as “Lily of the Nile” are in full bloom here in Southern California. I love the dramatic blooms. They come in white to a deep electric blue. In some parts of the world they are consider a weed. Weed or not I look forward to seeing these beauties bloom every summer.

The last few months have really gotten away from me. Realized last week I hadn’t posted to my blog for two months!! I have had my head down creating paintings for two shows for this summer. I was accepted back into Laguna Festival of Arts in Laguna Beach, CA. The show runs from June 31 to August 31.
On July 14th I have the pleasure of showing my work with
Neil Hollingsworth at
Tree’s Place Gallery . This show runs thru July 19. Needless to say, I am pretty excited about this. I have been an admirer of Neil’s work for a long time and am so pleased that I was asked to participate.
I have missed posting and now that all my obligations to summer shows have been met I can turn back to creating small paintings for my blog.

These little guys have been sitting on a shelf in my studio for a long time, but not until this week did I think of grouping them together for a painting. They were fun to paint and may be destined for another appearance.
