The San Francisco setting is appropriately evocative for the ghost story/mystery, and Gilda is a 'spunky', if- oddly, I thought- not always entirely likeable protagonist- perhaps this makes her more interesting. I was somewhat taken aback by certain risque elements in the book as well, primarily language related (the word 'porno', some mild swear words)- not from a personal point of view but from a writers point of view, I wondered at the 9-12 age group classification (the language and somewhat heavy subject matter- suicide, mental illness) seems somewhat at odds with the cute cover artwork, too. In any case, the book still had many fun moments in addition to some melancholy/spooky scenes. I will be curious to read more in the series. I have been looking for kids mysteries, as I am trying to write one myself, and this definitely fit the bill.
