Born and brought up in the heart of eighteenth-century London, Charles Lamb had around him a fascinating, varied and bustling scene that was to form the background to many of the essays and poems of his later life. His was not a glamorous childhood, and he had to leave the Bluecoat School at fifteen to earn his living as a clerk while his great friend, Coleridge, went on to win honours at Cambridge. Trudy West, in her first contribution to the Famous Childhoods series, shows a sensitive little boy absorbing and enjoying all that was going on around him, and beginning to put on paper his impressions of life that are still read and enjoyed today. --- Charles Lamb (1775-1834) was an English essayist, best known for his "Essays of Elia" and for the children's book "Tales from Shakespeare", which he produced with his sister, Mary Lamb (1764-1847). Lamb has been referred to by E.V. Lucas, his principal biographer, as "the most lovable figure in English literature".
