Lions, lobsters, foxes, frogs, snakes, donkeys, cats and dogs are only a few of the animals that parade through the pages of this book of selected fables from Aesop. These are animals that talk and behave lik humans, and each embodies some human trait of interest to us all. Tehre are seldom more than three characters in a tale, more often only two, and their simple, straightforward actions result in a single, and often funny climax. According to tradition, Aesop was an ancient Greek slave whose talent for storytelling won him his freedom. Most probably, Aesop was not himself an inventor of tales, but simply told his own versions of stories that had been in existence for countless centuries. Similar fables are found all over the world, in India and China, for example, and also turn up in some of the Brer Rabbit stories. The wit and vigor of the seventeen tales told here in verse by Ennis Rees, a modern storyteller and poet, is well matched by their colorful translations into a visual equivalent by Edward Gorey, one of our most distinguished illustrators.
