MoreDan Taylor, chief executive of Thunderbird Oil Company, an independent exploration company, was working late at his desk. His office was well appointed with dark, heavy oak bookcases and ceil-ing beams. On the floor were two large Joshagun Persian rugs with their deep reds and blues. It was a spacious office and his desk was large with inlaid dark blue leather. Everything smacked of money and Dan had plenty of money. A geologist, 52, very successful and with a very pretty wife, Dan had everything. His large home on ten acres in a neighborhood of large, beautiful homes was most impressive. He had started from scratch. His family had a long lineage in Texas, having arrived in the 1820's. One group, the maternal side, came with Stephen F. Austin as part of the three hundred pioneer families brought from Missouri. The paternal side arrived along the Texas coast by boat from Pensacola, Florida. They were all hearty frontier stock who carved out a good living in the soon to be Repub-lic of Texas. Although they were good, God fearing people, and had decent lives, they never were wealthy. Dan Taylor had changed that. Having worked his way through the University of Texas by doing a number of part time jobs, including waiting tables at one of the girls' dormitories, his ambition was always apparent. Through his contact with a new class of freshmen women each year he had ample opportunity to select only the prettiest and wealthiest ones for coffee dates and an occasional weekend of social events.
