The adventures begin after the death of Marcella's husband and mother, when she must raise seven of her fourteen children by earning and saving egg money, and occasional assistance from Grandpa Harry. A harrowing trip to California from Indiana, in an old rundown bus, reveals Marcella's night blindness when she misses a turn into a gas station. The adventure continues only to discover that settling down in California is not a good idea. The return to Indiana wreaks of housing problems because of the family's size. An innovative idea to mask the family's size works until the truth is discovered. The eviction is resolved by living in Grandpa Harry's now empty house. While on his deathbed, Grandpa Harry confesses to Marcella of his Indiana escapades during the great Depression, the result of which will change many lives. The shocking and surprising revelation induces Marcella to doubt her ability to hold the family together. The resolution to her problem may rest with the contributions from her energetic young son, Joe, leading to a startling conlcusion.
