This book is an illustrated survey of electricity for younger readers and as part of the "Focus on resources" series considers this form of energy and how it is processed and used. The author gives a brief history of electricity, explaining its nature and how it was discovered, and discusses some of the various energy sources it harnesses, such as fossil fuels, nuclear, hydroelectric, solar and wave power. Electricity is used widely both in the home and in industry to power household appliances including fridges, vacuum cleaners and food mixers, to operate machinery such as drills, saws, lathes and to drive computers and communications systems in modern offices. The book also explains how mains electricity is produced and distributed, the importance of colour codes and fuses and how it can be used safely. The text is complemented by explanatory diagrams, a glossary, sources of further information, facts and figures and an index.
