This book is an introduction to the history and development of painting and sculpture throughout the world and is part of a series in which each book takes a look at an individual art, discussing its history, traditions, social aspects and specific forms and movements. The series aims to encourage readers to find out more about the arts for themselves and to take part in and enjoy all they have to offer. Throughout the centuries artists have produced images portraying their view of the world, or the world as they would like it to be. Their art reflects their concerns, their hopes and their fears. In this book we follow the development of art, from Stone Age paintings to the varied art styles of our own time. We look at the art of the ancient world and trace its development into the great flowering of Renaissance art. We also look at the history and development of Oriental and Islamic art, and at the art of Australia, the Pacific islands, the Americas and Africa, and see how these different traditions have influenced Western art.
