This series aims to promote an investigative approach to history and to encourage children to explore the past through what they can find out from their surroundings. The reader is told how to gather information and use it in a positive and constructive manner. This illustrated book provides a different approach to the study of history by looking at the beginnings of transport, the roads, waterways and all the different types of transport that have been used through history to the present day. It begins by pointing out how transport relates to the reader in his or her everyday life. The author discusses transport today: local travel, air, rail and road travel, detailing the changes and developments which have taken place in recent times. He goes on to explain how rail travel began in the steam age and how the waterways were a vital form of transport for people and industry. He then discusses the history of roads, from the very first primitive tracks to the roads we use today. The book concludes with a chapter on how the reader should plan his or her project, giving helpful hints and pointers.
