On Earth, William Snottengrout appears to be just an ordinary 11-year-old boy with mousy hair and sticky out ears. He and his friend Ellie are constantly being picked on by the school bully, Fat Freddy, who makes their life a misery. And if that were not bad enough, William's father vanished two years ago - under mysterious circumstances. Then, one day, something happens that turns William's whole world around. A strange old man in the local park tells him that he is not just an ordinary boy, but a Warlord and a Prince. His missing father is King of a magical land called Umbajumba, and has been imprisoned by his evil uncle, Gangor, who has stolen the throne. The sacred writings of Umbajumba decree that only William Snottengrout can save his father - and the entire kingdom - from Gangor's evil clutches.
