The 2002 World Cup in Korea/Japan kicks off on 31 May 2002 in Seoul, Korea and reaches its climax on the last day of June in Yokohama, Japan with 32 nations aiming to be world champions. It's the first World Cup to be staged outside Europe or the Americas, and co-hosts Japan and Korea have ten stadiums each, all but two brand-new having been built since the start of 2000. England began their pursuit of qualification for Korea/Japan 2002 at the start of October 2000. Aside from the first two matches the England team has been led by new coach Sven-Goran Eriksson, and qualified either by topping their group/ via a play-off match.
