Pepper Martin must move from her grandparents home in rural Kansas, to live with eccentric Aunt Lucenda in upper-class Stonehill Heights. She feels lonely and unwelcome at this spooky old Victorian estate. She hears mysterious footsteps, doors slamming when no one is there, and a light in the attic that seemingly has no access. When she and her best new friend, Josey, spend a stormy night in the carriage house, through flashes of lightening, they see a stranger in the carriage house yard. The spunky young sleuth often needs to be reminded of the Christian values taught to her by her grandmother. It is the time of World War II and everyone is doing their part on the home front to help win the war, except cantankerous Agnes who is hording rationed commodities.
