Once a year, eleven-year-old Katie Freeman and her older brother, Jack, suffer through a visit from their rigid, peculiar, and insufferable Aunt Rudean. But this year, their aunt carelessly allows a sinister scheme to unfold. After their parents turn up missing, Katie and Jack stumble upon a hidden doorway monitored by a mysterious voice who lures them and their friends on a dangerous journey to a magical kingdom where the kids become hunted; and just when things can't seem to get worse, they uncover an evil plot to slay their parents. Even with their newfound knowledge and the combined skills of wizards, elves, and mermaids, all seems lost until an unexpected discovery is made that leads Katie and Jack to a plan that will either save them or deliver them all to a final destruction.
