This little study guide will help the student learn critical thinking, build vocabulary and writing skills, explore history and art, all while reading through the classic, Shades of Gray, a novel by Carolyn Reeder on the subject of the Civil War.

Each book in the Booklinks to Social Studies Series integrates literature with the study of history and social studies. The selected literature books give students a greater understanding of important historical events, places and people. The activities for each book encourage students to think critically about what they have read and provide opportunities for students to work in cooperative learning groups.

Each novel chosen has been chosen for its literary qualities; several are Newberry Award winners. All featured novels are currently in print in either paperback or hardcover editions.
