In the passage through the roji, or tea garden, we are invited to the mental and spiritual repose requisite to the tea gathering, leaving worldly cares in order to immerse ourselves in nature. Before entering the teahouse, hands and mouth are rinsed in an act of purification. As water gently drips from a bamboo pipe into an exquisitely carved stone bowl, we are reminded of the essence of water and its life-giving properties.
