MoreA Hawaii Japanese New Year with Yuki-chan. By: Tokie Ching. Illustrated by Kerina Salazar. Synopsis: As a child I would look forward to the New Year festivities all year long. I have many vivid and warm memories of experiencing and participating in the many traditions of the New Year including the religious ceremonies, cooking and foods, decorations, preparations, and rituals that are believed to result in a successful new year. I remember how excited our family of eight children was as we all worked, prepared and experienced the New Year. My grandparents who were born in Japan and my parents who were born in Hawaii had a profound influence on how we celebrated the Japanese New Year. I can still hear my Grandpa, Mom and Dad's explanations of each ritual for the New Year like it was yesterday. As a child, I decided that I was going to carry on the traditions of Japanese New Year with my own family. When my adopted daughter experienced her first New Year in Hawaii, I was deeply touched to observe the joy that Yuki-chan was experiencing from making mochi, to cleaning the alter and helping me prepare New Year foods. Our family was shocked and thrilled when she sweetly sang the New Year song spontaneously and tried to teach it to us. I was so proud that I could now carry on the traditions just as my grandparents and parents taught me when I was a child. I have used the traditions of the Japanese New Year as a way to introduce children to the Japanese culture and language in the schools. I've observed that even children not of Japanese heritage enjoy learning about and participating in the many traditions of the New Year. After I retired, my peers encouraged me to write about them because there wasn't a single children's book that they could find to help them explain the New Year traditions. Hardcover.
