MoreSammie's Journey to Freedom is the story of a young boy who longs for freedom, yet has been born at a time when rights and knowledge are forbidden to slaves. Families are split up without any concern for their feelings, which is the worst possible thing that could happen to a slave. All hope of remaining together ends the dreadful day that Sammie and his family are each sold to different owners. He is taken to a plantation where Gertie, a large black woman, takes him in and cares for him. From Gertie's son Jake, Sammie learns about the Underground Railroad, a system of hiding places manned by people called conductors. This is exciting news for Sammie, and when he learns that Jake plans an escape, he wants to join him. This begins the daring journey to freedom until they are able to make it to Canada and complete freedom. Once in Canada, will Sammie's dreams come true? Teaching history led Bertie Warren to want to write stories based on historical facts. That is how Sammie's Journey to Freedom became a reality. She also has begun several novels and hopes to have one published in the future. She is currently working on a children's story about the Oregon Trail. She lives in Bakersfield, California.
