But whatever happened, he, Matt, and Mother would at least be together-wouldn't they? When Daniel's father had died suddenly of pneumonia, his mother could not earn enough money to support her sons. "The Shakers have strange ways," Pastor Barton had told her, "but they let people come to live with them." The neighbors, though, had said nothing.
