10/19/2008 Jennifer Freese said: I loved the way this book is written. As the children find different materials that they are unfamiliar with, the author describes them in ways that the reader can identify them, and makes the discovery for their uses believable. I liked the book much better than the movie.

7/7/2008 Harry Huberty said: The high point of DuPrau's writing, to me, is the fact that she managed to never write a simile or a metaphor that makes a comparison her characters wouldn't be able to make. She can do a lot with some very simple sentences.
