MoreIt is the fateful summer of 1863 in the small, quiet town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, just days before the great battle erupts. Fifteen-year-old Billy Flynn and his best friend, Wyatt Tomkins, both champion runners, are hoping for an opportunity to join the army against their parents' wishes. However, Billy intends to enlist with the Union troops, but Wyatt supports the Confederate cause. Before they can act on their plans, they are captured by a scouting party of unsympathetic Rebels, who force them to join their regiment. While the group is marching on the outskirts of their hometown, they are unexpectedly confronted by a large band of armed Gettysburg civilians. A fire fight breaks out, and the veteran Confederates easily overcome the untrained citizens, taking many prisoners. Among the captives are the fathers of Billy and Wyatt. Realizing that they are the only hope for the captured townsmen, the two boys make a daring escape from the Rebels and begin a grueling fifteen-mile run to the Maryland border, where a Union cavalry brigade is encamped. With time running out for the civilians, Billy and Wyatt must put all their endurance and willpower to the supreme test, and try to obtain the help of the Federal horse soldiers.
