On the Long Island coast, Smith Point Beach overlooks a part of the ocean called Shipwreck Valley. For centuries, ships have gone down there, lives have been lost, and treasures have sunk to the bottom of the sea. Twelve-year-old Matthew Kirby sets off down the beach one fall morning after a fierce storm. He discovers a man washed up with the tide, and to his amazement, the man claims to be a pirate from the year 1684. Matthew doesn't think Captain Power looks like a pirate, but unsure of what to do, he takes him home. The Kirbys aren't prepared for a knife-wielding, car-fearing rascal, who has no qualms about setting a cannon off on the streets of Port Jeff, New York. To add to their disbelief, their elderly neighbor claims that she came from the past as well.
