J.W. Gilclay is a thirteen-year-old Texas boy who wants to be a farmer when he grows up. He loves everything about the farm; that's why he is very disappointed when his father decides to give up farming and return to Marshall and his previous job at the sawmill. He's even more disappointed when his parents respond to an advertisement to become players in movies and take off to Hollywood in pursuit of fame and riches. In Hollywood, things don't turn out to be quite as the family expected, and J.W. is asked to do what he can to help the family make ends meet. On one of his jobs, J.W. discovers his talent for art. As this humorous and inspirational novel concludes, J.W. has become happy that the move from the farm may provide him with a life he had never dreamed of.
