"Wake up, sleepyhead. It's your birthday," Nell shouts as she brings her pillow down on her brother's head. When Bill eases himself from the bed on his ninth birthday, he looks forward to an outing with his sister. Mother kisses the pair goodbye as they head out the door with bulging lunch bags. However, the picnic they planned in the meadow takes an unexpected turn. When their little kitten, Tabby, dashes into the woods, Nell forgets that Mother said the forest is off limits and takes off after it with Bill following to stop her. Once in the woods, they lose direction and stumble for what seems like hours through weeds and heavy undergrowth, deep into the thick of the forest. "What's that rumbling sound?" Nell asks Bill. By the time they hear thunder overhead, they have gone too far to find their way back before an electric storm hits. The adventures that follow challenge all their instincts for survival and their faith as Bill and Nell encounter forces in the forest and beyond that threaten to keep them from ever seeing home again.
