Winnie, a capricious eleven-year-old girl living on a homestead in a small southern Utah town during the early 1930s, is prone to fantasized fears. Her vivid imagination often escalates these fantasies into full-blown terror. A classmate, aware of Winnie's fears, doesn't miss an opportunity to terrorize her. He convinces her that she is destined to be a bear's first meal of the season after a long winter nap; that she is bound to be the victim of a coiled rattle snake ready to strike; and that a wicked witch is lurking in the shadows waiting for an opportunity to cast a spell on her. Despite her fears, Winnie skips through life relishing work and play with her best friend in the small town that she so dearly loves. When disaster strikes the homestead where Winnie lives with her family, she must show courage in the face of real danger.
