In a small coral reef under the sea lives Albert, the only hermit crab in the reef. Because he has no shell, the other crabs tease him, making Albert very sad. Albert tries to find a shell that will be better then everyone else's, thinking that this will make him feel better. Each shell he finds to try and impress the other crabs turns out to be a disaster. The other crabs tease him more and more. Albert decides to run away. It is while he is alone on the beach, far from the coral reef, that Albert begins to realize that he must be himself if he is going to be happy. While on the beach, Albert finds the strangest shell he has ever seen. At first, this strange shell does not impress the other crabs, but it turns out to be the best shell for Albert.
