Russ, a nerdy, not-so-popular kid, is uprooted from his comfortable suburban environment when his family has to move to a dilapidated house in rural northeast Georgia. The creepy old house hides a sordid past. Russ' grandfather was brutally murdered in the kitchen, and they never caught the person who did it. As they explore the property, Russ and a newfound friend discover an old car parked in a barn hidden under a kudzu patch. Upon closer examination, the boys discover that it is covered in bullet holes. The mystery deepens as they pillage the attic and discover a wooden box with a false bottom in it. There they find a key and some letters that give clues as to the owner of the car. As the story unfolds, Russ learns of his family's shady past, and unlocks clues that point toward a hidden treasure and a famous gangster.
