MoreJoey wasn’t just afraid of rattlers, he was terrified. And on Rattlesnake Ranch they were everywhere " under the cacti, in the weeds, between the rows of cotton. Joey almost always found one in the haystack when he fed the cows. It coiled like a garden hose come to life. The beady eyes stared out of a flat, ugly head. The snake’s tongue darted in and out, and its tail blurred with motion. That buzzing sent chills racing up Joey’s spine. If rattlesnakes bothered Joey, so did the “skeleton in the closet.” That’s what his step-mother called the family secret. She and Pa wouldn’t tell it to Joey, but he thought the “skeleton” had something to do with that young woman who haunted his dreams. Could she be his real mother? Joey had to find out. The only break from work came to Joey at church. Since his father was a deacon, the family attended every service. Brother Bishop’s hell-fire sermons scared Joey almost as much as the rattlesnakes on the ranch. But Joey liked singing, Bible study, and being with Matthew. Matt was the preacher’s son and Joey’s best friend. He didn’t even tease Joey about being afraid of rattlesnakes. Both boys enjoyed telling scary stories, horseback riding, and exploring forbidden places. But some things Joey had to discover for himself such as that dark family secret, “the skeleton in the closet.”
