Wes and his kid brother, Jay, accompany their parents on an exciting family vacation to the beach. Going to the Beach chronicles their first day, from the beautiful morning that greets their departure, through the long drive past idyllic panoramas, and finally to their experiences of sand castles, seashells, and sunsets.

Children will love the colorful pictures, especially the antics of the family's pet lizard, who appears in each illustration, reminiscent of Clement Hurd's tiny mouse from the modern children's literature classic Goodnight Moon.

Lara Smither's illustrations are colorful and bold, consisting of pictures drawn on multiple sheets of card stock, then pieced together to produce scenes layered with multicolored brilliance. Her intricate artwork - sponged with Acrylic paint to brighten and soften each layer - offers brightly colored, picturesque vistas while maintaining the simplicity of a child's perspective.
