A diagnosis of diagnosis of diabetes wouldn't be anyone's first choice of news from his or her doctor. Yet, by understanding what diabetes is and how to live with it, people with the disease are discovering they can do pretty much whatever they want with their lives.

If you've just been told that you have diabetes, you may feel a little like Mario, who was diagnosed with it when he was ten. His uncle, meaning to encourage him, told him the inspiring story of someone with diabetes who had climbed Mount Everest. Already overwhelmed, Mario yelled, "You mean I have to climb Mount Everest too?!" Ok, so you may not feel like climbing Mount Everest right now, but you do need to believe that your life is not over. If you've had diabetes since you were a kid, then you need to know that puberty may make it harder to control. If you're reading this because a friend or family member has diabetes, then you can find out what this disease is all about and how to help in an emergency.
