To prevent Mr. Bump from discovering plans for a special surprise birthday party, the kids come up with a variety of excuses to keep him away until the big surprise. Mr. Bump however, feels he is being rejected and is very lonely. Lauryn is experiencing the same feelings because she has a new baby brother and is afraid that he has taken her place.

Lauryn seeks out the hiding Mr. Bump and brings him to the Flip Flop Shop and he hesitantly enters. He is greeted with the happy sounds of his surprise birthday party celebration and is once again a happy man.

Mary Lou ends with the message that just like every fingerprint and every single snowflake that falls, each one of us is special and one of a kind. All of us are important for who we are and there is no one in the world who could take our place. She reminds us that we saw how easily Lauryn and Mr. Bump could feel rejected because of what others do or say. She also reminds us to remember to tell all those we love how special they are and how much they mean to us ... and not just on birthdays!
