Willie & the World Wide Web is a modern fable that is as entertaining as it is meaningful for young children of the information age. A richly illustrated children's picture book, it features 17 full-color paintings done in watercolor and mixed media.
The book tells the story of Willie McBee. On his birthday, Willie finds a mysterious present. The present, a magic CD-ROM, offers Willie an amazing choice. He can choose to literally enter his computer, fly through the Internet and explore the World Wide Web, or he can press exit and the disk will be forever erased.
Willie enters the Web, where he meets Evelyn, a cyberspace astronaut who leads Willie through a site titled Wonders of Our World: a 3D Interactive Encyclopedia for Children. Evelyn and Willie explore Web environments in the site such as The Solar System, The Age of the Dinosaurs and The City of the Future
Willie then chooses to leave the encyclopedia and embarks on a voyage that leads him to a game site, a toy store in a cybermall, and a chat room for children. Willie eventually lands back in his room, but his adventure is not over. Willie remembers that the Evelyn of the Web is the same Evelyn who was a daring airplane pilot in an antique children's book titled Evelyn's World Wide Adventure-a book his mother had read to him when he was younger.
Just as Evelyn had entertained and educated Willie when he listened to his mother read stories about Evelyn's worldwide airplane adventures, it seems Evelyn has once again made it possible for Willie to embark on a fascinating and enlightening worldwide journey.
However, as he prepares to leave with his family for the beach, Willie is not sure if his adventure really happened. Was the voyage through the Web a real adventure? Or was it the virtual reality of childhood dream? As the story draws to a close, Willie is given a special gift that will answer his question about his wondrous World Wide Web experience. The book includes a glossary of basic Internet and computer terms.
