Illustrated by Rae Owings.
Max is a young son of the obscure Purple Royal Rabbits, so called not because of any royal blood, but because they are the color purple. Maxs father wants his family to mingle among others and to learn from them, so he takes his family of 18 from their homeland to the New World. Because they are different they are laughed at and mocked in the land of promise.
Sonny, the eldest son, after a humiliating experience with his father, runs away taking only his beloved saxophone, determined to make a life for himself out from under his fathers domination. The purple rabbits return to their homeland. Only Max is given permission to remain look for his brother, when Papa gives Max the gift of letting go.
So begins Maxs epic journey to find Sonny, who is always one step ahead of him on the road of life. Innocent, non-jaded Max, out in the world for the first time meets new situations without preconceived prejudices. With each surprise encounter he meets the moment, taking from it and giving to it. He learns that all things are possible. He is driven by his mission. He never gives up; he deals with each situation, often with humor, then moves on, never losing his focus.
The format of MAX AND FRIENDS begins in the present with a family reunion at the Hotel Jolly. The body of the epic is told in flashback over the period of one year leading to the present party.
Maxs lessons are lifes basic success patterns: -Always be yourself. Never lose your soul. Listen to your inner voice.- Treat others the way they want to be treated, not the way you would want to be treated. We are all connected and, in each encounter, we leave something behind and take something away. The passing on of knowledge is a circle.-Read and you will always have a friend. Mothers are our first gurus. Family love is unconditional.-Listen. Every breath does not have to be a spoken word. All things are possible. Keep going - sometimes you have to pierce through the pain to get to the peace.
Throughout his travels, Max makes friends of strangers. He is never held back because he is different. He meets characters who affect him and whom he affects in return. There are the Bandit Bears (inventors of the Bear Hug); Frank and Hank Seal and Lucille (nutritionists); Spinster Spinning Top (who is turned around by Max): the Stick Brothers (who learn to bend); Norman the Circus Elephant (who learns to lighten up); the Umbrella Man (who finds his place in the sun); Mayor Rock Bottom (who reforms and rebounds to the top): Eduardo Orso (the teddy bear film director); Essie Cucumber (the no-talent, adorable actress); and the famous actor Morris Bernstein (who learned early in life that being a black and white Jewish penguin was no handicap at all.).
