Changing Horizons covers the history of Britain between 1914 and 1980. Written primarily for sixth formers, it focuses on four major themes:
changes in the British economy; changes in British society;Britain's changing role in the world; and the loss of its imperial status. The book is punctuated by Time Charts which illustrate the the coincidences which make the task of the statesman so difficult. In 1919 for instance Lloyd George was representing Britain at the Paris Peace Conference, grappling with protest movements in India and Ireland and struggling to cope with the problems of demobilisation and unemployment in Britain.

There are Points at Issue at the end of most chapters to ventilate the disagreements which continue to divide historians, for instance the economic policies pursued by the National Government in the 1930s, the Munich crisis in 1938 and the Suez crisis in 1956.There are suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter and the book is amply illustrated.
