In this series a wide variety of topics are discussed, following their progression and development during the 20th century. This book provides an overview of transport in the 20th century from the horse and carriage to driverless trains. At the beginning of the century many forms of transport were in existence but in the period before World War I the development of the internal combustion engine revolutionized transport. The effect of the two World Wars on transport was dramatic and saw the advent of fighter aircraft and, after the World War II, jet aircraft. Between the wars cars became cheaper, aircraft began to carry passengers and liners continued to carry people and cargo around the world. Railways continued to expand, culminating in driverless trains which bear witness to the large part in the development of modern transport played by the electronics industry . The launching of the first satellite in the 1950s heralded the start of a new era and there is now an increasing tendency towards using robot transport of all kinds. At the same time the book looks at the need to economize on fuel and materials and to reduce environmental pollution and how this is affecting the design of today's vehicles. The author worked as a science editor for a leading publisher and is now a freelance author and editor. He has written many books and articles for children on science and technology.
