Classroom teachers (specifically language arts and social studies), school and public library youth librarians, and professors of children's and young adult literature will find this a useful reference. This book is an annotated bibliography of books and non-print materials for young people relating to the Southern Appalachian region (mainly Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.) The bibliographies cover children's, young adult, and appropriate adult literature in the genres of autobiography and memoir, fiction, nonfiction, picture books, poetry, and reference tools for grades K-12. Other sections include a bibliography of professional resources for teachers, discography and videography, directory of relevant Internet resources, and directory of museums, and organizations relevant to Appalachian studies. There is also a small collection of booktalks and lesson plans making use of these resources for librarians and teachers. Appalachian Literature for Youth makes educators and librarians aware of the large, diverse canon of materials available for young people on Appalachia, a region of the United States rich in unique culture, history, and traditions, encouraging educators to shatter the many misconceptions and stereotypes widely held about Southern Appalachian culture and people by exposing their students to the literature of the region.
