Until she meets the Tooth Fairy, Alex Vandershoot has thought of herself as just a regular kid. Even if, at seven and a half, she is the last one in her class to still have all her baby teeth. Even if her mom the painter is a little unusual. Even if her family has to move from Texas to California. But when Alex finally, finally loses that first special tooth, she doesn't want to give it up. Forget the quarter. She writes a note to the Tooth Fairy, who writes back: In this case I can make an exception, if you promise to keep and treasure your tooth as much as I would. During the next few months Alex looses several more teeth and develops a secret relationship with the T.F.. (as she signs the fancy letters that appear under Alex's pillow). So much for Alex being a regular kid with a regular life. A private life is much more fun. Hers is magical.
