The "Starting Science" series is designed to make science themes come alive through a combination of full-page impact photographs with commentary for discussion, activities and investigations in which the children are involved and background information further linking pictures and activities into each chapter's topic. Each book in the series provides an introduction to science enquiry methods. In using them the teacher will find they are involving the other core subjects of language and maths. Through the activities and investigations, the children use a variety of ways to explore the world around them and to record their discoveries. The activities and investigations are closely related to children's early experiences and can be used flexibly, depending on their ability. They are designed to be easily accessible to parents or teachers. Focusing on day and night, this book discusses the effects of the earth's movement and explains different methods of telling the time, from making a sundial to the 24-hour clock. Practical topics encourage children to learn about the effects of light and darkness on plants, and the cycle of the moon. The book covers aspects of the National Science Curriculum at Key Stage 1 (levels 1 to 3) for the following Attainment Targets: AT1 exploration of science; AT2 the variety of life; AT16 the Earth in space.
