This series describes the different aspects of the lives of people in bygone times. Each book deals with a particular area of their existence. The series also provides general background information about the period. A book which deals with the home front during World War II which focuses on the Blitz, evacuation, rationing, the Home Guard, schooling and the contribution made by women as mothers and workers. The author begins the book with a brief description of how war broke out in Europe and the mixture of fear and uncertainty that families felt as Britain entered the fray. He then goes on to show how families adapted to the changes that war necessitated; living in a war-time economy and the systems of rationing, living through the Blitz, pitching in with voluntary work. The author devotes two chapters to the affects of the war on children; he describes the reasons for evacuation and attempts to convey the distress that this caused to many families. He also shows how schools were able to continue throughout the war.
