This is a comprehensive look at the physical and human geography of Guyana, using the major systemic divisions of the subject to organize the material. Starting with physical geography - geomorphology, weather and climate, soils and vegetation - the book then progresses to the environment and indigenous peoples. Detailed consideration is given to resources and development, such as mining, forest products and fishing. The relationship between environmental conditions and human activity is explored in the rice industry and sugar-cane farming where irrigation and drainage conditions are favourable, and in other agricultural activity elsewhere. The book then considers both geographical and historical factors affecting the demography, with a look at towns and settlements, manufacturing trade, tourism and transport. Throughout, there are also suggestions for fieldwork, and students are encouraged to employ observation skills and to question what they are taught against that which they see and hear.
