Throughout the world the 20th century has been a time of expansion, both in terms of population growth and technological advances. In recent decades we have seen discoveries and inventions that have made our life on this planet more comfortable, convenient, safe and profitable. There is a price to this progress, however. As more and more people cover the globe and try to change it for their own purposes, the earth suffers. The chemicals we have come to rely on pollute the water and the air. When we cut down forests to make room for people, we destroy wildlife and change our climate. We have developed nuclear energy to meet our need for electricity, but we cannot dispose of the waste it generates. If we do not change our ways, and soon, our quest for progress may well do us in. The state of the earth should be of great concern to everyone these days, especially to young people who have inherited problems such as overpopulation, too much waste, dirty air and water, acid rain, holes in the ozone, global warmimg and disappearing wildlife. The author details the specifics of the environmental crisis, explains how we got to this point and offers possible solutions in each chapter. By listing all of the facts and opinions currently in vogue, he shows that there are no sure-fire remedies but, on the other hand, not every warning from the environmentalists is true. His arguments and suggestions will inspire readers to take stock of their own potentially damaging activities and to come up with new ways to improve life in the 21st century.
